About the Author
Lisa Graham is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at the University of Texas at Arlington. She is a recipient of the Illumina Teaching Award, a national teaching award honoring design professors presented by the American Institute of Graphic Arts and The Justice Organization. Her illustrations have appeared in the MIT publications, Computer Music Journal, Leonardo, and Terra Nova. Ms. Graham has produced a wide range of graphic designs, illustrations, and informational graphics for clients in the fashion, high-tech, energy, military, and geology industries.

Book offers a good start for begining design students

This is a really simple book which offers BEGINNING graphic design students a source of simplified information about layouts and type. This book is directed towards purely beginner designers and students who are in the intro classes. I wouldn't suggest this book if you have ANY prior knowledge of graphic design, but I whole heartedly suggest this book to any student who is just starting out.

With that being said, there are other books out there that offer more valueable informtion, but this book is a good simplified source of information that is easy to take in and understand.

Coherent and Accessible

A friend of mine recommended this book as a solid introduction to graphic design. The author, Lisa Graham, covers the principles of design effectively and even throws in some unexpectedly funny explanations that really make the point. For example, the beginning of the Balance chapter is hilarious and made me realize that a page really can make a person feel weird, if it isn't designed using the design principles. Once I read that balance chapter, I realized that many of her illustrations also were surprisingly humerous, and reveals what must be a delightful sense of humor.
If you buy this book, keep in mind that the humor is used to support the points Graham makes, and is not the sole focus of the book. This is after all a design book and makes some serious and informative points.
Perhaps what is most effective about this book is the thorough explanations she gives on why a design works and why it doesn't work. This is a refreshing change from many other introductory design books that I looked at where the primary focus of the text seemed to be to show off pretty pictures. Pretty pictures are nice, but WHY do the designs work? WHY don't they work. Basics of Design tells you why, and in such a wonderfully understandable way that you remember, and easily apply what Graham teaches.
Good job Lisa. When are you going to write more books on graphic design? I'll be sure to keep an eye out for more of your work!

Absolutely Wonderful

I am a complete dunce at design (or at least I was). Whatever the optical equivalent to a "tin ear" is, I have it. In this book Ms. Graham gives step-by-step simple and yet logical and practical instruction on how to make one's designs both attractive and effective. Her writing style often made me feel as if I were being given advice by a "friend in the design business." I began using the principles that she teaches in my web pages and flyer designs before I was even half-way through the book. The improvements that I saw in my abilities were amazing.
This book has (the basics of) everything: typography, contrast, color, flow, emphasis, etc. Most of the books I had examined prior to finding this little gem were nothing more than over-sized "picture books" with writing in the margins, I couldn't bring myself to spend the money on so little information (but they sure were pretty). This book, on the other hand, is mostly text with small, well-selected illustrations, and at the end of every chapter the author gives several "case-studies" of the current topic and walks the reader through each one.
I cannot imagine a better book for someone new to design.

In her enticing second book (after The Scorsese Connection), South African-born Australian writer Stern explores the rituals, economics and cultural role of smoking, and the exquisite hold tobacco takes over those who enjoy it. If Stern had limited herself to the cultural deconstruction at which she is adept, she might have written a work of cultural criticism But instead she links more than 50 often stunning and always intriguing pieces in a m?lange of genres, including fiction, memoir, history and criticism. Examining smoking from so many vantages, Stern touches on a number of themes. She offers glimpses of the tobacco trade in the former Rhodesia, where among tobacco farmers smoking was obligatory, almost patriotic, and she describes the tobacco sales rooms in Harare, Zimbabwe, where billions of dollars' worth of tobacco are sold annually. To understand tobacco's role in colonialism, she tells of early explorers' and invaders' forays in Africa, and to analyze smoking's cultural role she dips into Barthes and Derrida as well as opera, art and films. Stern's engrossing panegyric to nicotine is a complicated web of memoir and cultural criticism in 54 pieces (plus notes and glossary) that touches on nearly every aspect of the addiction--including the pleasure. The vignettes cover an extremely wide range of experiences and interests and span six continents (no smoking on Antarctica), though most are set in Africa, where the author was raised, and Australia, where she lives and works. But no matter the place or whether the encounter (or lack of) is physical or intellectual, smoking is the fulcrum around which revolve her desires. Often, a cigarette, the thought of a cigarette, the smell of her own or someone else's burning cigarette, or even the image on a pack of cigarettes sends her (and the reader) down sometimes funny, sometimes painful, sometimes poignant Proustian tangents of recollection or thoughtful examination. Stern's writing is witty and peppered with interesting references, and the best pieces are her recollections of her youth and family in what was then Rhodesia, where she grew up on a tobacco farm and where the pleasures of addiction and cultural inquiry took root. Stern writes a little puff of pleasure

Lesley Stern has written a smart, witty literary book about a million things important to us, using hybrid forms: short story, essay, meditation--all of which spin like smoke from the cultural conceit of the cigarette. This is a book about Africa, tobacco, orality, movies, sex, culture, desire and loss. The globe-trotting narrator takes us through the streets of Manhattan, o'er the freeways of LA, into hotel rooms in Tokyo, dinner parties in Scotland, as well as the tobacco farms and factories in Zimbabwe. Great fun--a winner.

Sanskrit is the ancient language of thousands of sacred scriptures of the Sanatana dharma or Eternal Truth revealed down the ages in India. Because these Sanskrit writings are still the living guides for the moral, aesthetic, intellectual and spiritual life of the Indian peoples, to be able to express and to understand the Sanskrit terms of this lofty wisdom is to discover the heart of the culture of this ancient people and a richly laden aspect of the Divine in manifestation.

Sanskrit is rich in words dealing with the inner mysteries and workings of the mind, heart, soul and spirit, with the many states of consciousness in waking, sleeping and after-death life, with the origin, evolution and destiny of beings of all realms, and with the glorious descriptions of the Divine and Its infinite manifestations. About the Author

David H. Zald, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of psychology and a member of the Integrative Neuroscience program at Vanderbilt University. He received his doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Minnesota and completed neuropsychological training at the Ann Arbor Veterans Affairs Medical Center/University of Michigan Hospital Program in Neuropsychology. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in functional neuroimaging at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center and University of Minnesota before joining the faculty at Vanderbilt. Dr. Zald's research focuses on the neuropsychology of emotions, with a particular emphasis on the functions of the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex.
Scott L Rauch received his undergraduate degree with honors in Neuroscience from Amherst College
and attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati. He completed his residency training in Psychiatry as well as a Radiology Research Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Currently, Dr. Rauch is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Associate Chief of Psychiatry for Neuroscience Research at MGH, where he also serves as Director of the Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program and the MGH Division of Psychiatric Neuroscience Research and Neurotherapeutics. Clinically, he provides consultation in cases of treatment-resistant obsessive compulsive disorders. Dr. Rauch has contributed over 250 publications to the scientific literature and serves on the editorial boards of six journals. His principal scientific interests relate to neuroimaging and the neurobiology of anxiety disorders.

Healthy, tasty food fast!

Quite happy with this purchase. Ever since we moved back to the United States from Australia I've been missing the quick, healthy and tasty food I got from our local (in Australia) Wagamama.

The cookbook gives excellent direction on the majority of the items my wife and I enjoyed. The video DVD is a nice bonus as well.

Great recipe resource

This is such a great recipe book, and is presented beautifully! Many other customers complained about their favourite wagamama dishes being absent; well of course they're not going to include their whole menu, then people would stop going back to their restaurants! There is still a great range of recipes in this book, and I really love it.

Whoa Wagamama!

Wagamama is a Japanese-like restaurant I frequented while living in London. After going through withdrawals when I returned to California, I came across this cookbook. It is so good that you would not believe my review if I really, honestly wrote of how much I enjoy their food. The noodle dishes are best! For those of you who have not tried the food at Wagamama, think of simple and fresh ingredients tossed together in non-traditional ways. The recipes in this book are pretty easy and my limited skills in the kitchen are enough to make great meals.
