Must Have Reference for Juliana Jewelry

If you don't already know, DeLizza and Elster jewelry is among the most sought after costume jewelry around. Their use of unfoiled stones, art glass and other specialty rhinestones in fantastic multi-layered designs has made Juliana jewelry a standout. This beautiful jewelry is also extraordinarily well made, so it has held up well over the years.

Since DeLizza and Elster jewelry was never signed, it's always been difficult for the average collector to identify. Fortunately, Musetti's book contains a very detailed section on how to identify Juliana jewelry. She also uses lots of photos so that you can clearly understand exactly what she is describing to help with identification.

The book contains over 450 beautiful color photographs of DeLizza and Elster Juliana jewelry. My only criticism of the book is that some of the photos are a bit repetitious. On the other hand, I was also very pleased that Musetti included photographs of pieces that were attributed to and signed by other makers, such as Weiss, that were actually made by DeLizza and Elster.

I have a few pieces of jewelry in my collection that I had long suspected were Juliana, and I was delighted that my assumptions could actually be confirmed with photographic evidence from this book.

This is an absolute must have book for both the fledgling as well as experienced collector of costume jewelry.

Mouth-Watering Photos, But.....

Mouth-watering photos of glam Juliana parures, but not extremely useful for the collector of the odd brooch or set of earrings found at yard sales and second-hand shops.

There are few details regarding identifying characteristics, and I don't believe there is any first-hand information from either Mr. DeLizza or Mr. Elster in the text.

Savvy jewelry collectors easily recognize the D & E cat's eye and Easter egg gems but there are many other pieces which might not be so quickly identified; I was hoping for further information on these unpretentious yet lovely finds.

This book is truly amazing! The photographs are outstanding, not to mention the wonderful information provided on Juliana jewelry. It was wonderful to see a book that displayed this jewelry so beautifully. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who loves the gorgeous glitzy jewelry made by DeLizza & Elster. Thank you so much, Ms. Musetti, this will be one of my most treasured jewelry books that I know I will use over and over again!

How the Haitian Revolution Destroyed Slavery in the Western Hemisphere

Horne draws the conclusion that the Haitians and their revolution that abolished slavery set the stage of ending the institution of slavery. He shows that emancipation was not given but fought for. Haiti showed Africans and abolitionist alike that the only way slavery was to be abolished is for it to collapse on itself. Slavery was not going to be negotiated nor be reformed. This institution was to be met head on with force. This fervor eventually spread across the hemisphere and ended slavery in many parts of the Western Hemisphere. By the turn of the 19th century, slavery in the hemisphere was completely abolished. The book also gives us the history of the contentious relationship between Haitians and Dominicans. This strained relationship between the two groups who share the same island has been going on since the 19th century and continues to this day. Horne also sheds light on the United States foreign policy towards nations of color. The United States always tries to push forward its imperialistic goals, especially if it’s a country of color and in disarray like Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The book also shows that these chaotic situations that happened in Hispaniola has been the result of covert intervention to capitalize on the situation. The United States to this day still capitalizes on the trials and tribulations of Haiti. Horne feels that this book gives it’s due credit to the Haitian people that throughout the years, this group of people that populate a country that’s no bigger than the state of Maryland, has not only taken on the United States but the European powers in France, Spain and England. He implies that we owe a debt of gratitude to the Haitian people, and we do.

Horne strikes me as a very important writer on the history of black folk and issues of class, capital and international dynamics that affect our history and the country's as a whole. He is worth getting to know.

Good detail, very hard to read

This book is full of valuable primary sources - A+ for effort. It is also one of the most annoying books I have tried to read in a long time. The author seems to have worked with a thesaurus at hand, substituting awkward polysyllables for simple direct language whenever possible. In addition, the organization of the material - whatever that might be, I am still not clear - makes it hard to follow. So, I can recommend it only to dedicated readers who are looking for leads to some really colorful primary sources.

Not a Magic Wand

Buying this book did not give me the skill necessary to draw realistically. Some of it is a rehash of Drawing on the Right Side of Your Brain, but that one didn't help me much, either. Much acclaimed by those with talent, for those of us who have to struggle it's not a magic wand.

A classic!

First published in 1970, this book has become a classic! A book like this will not remain in print for 46 years unless it has extreme value.

As the title suggests, it teaches everything an artist needs to know to learn to draw accurately and realistically. The author's premise is that no matter what style or medium is used by the artist, it is first necessary to learn to draw realistically and accurately. He then does an excellent job of teaching the artist to do just that!

He begins simply. The first lesson is how to draw a straight line freehand. Then he teaches how to draw the basic forms that all objects are based on and later shows how to utilize those forms to draw anything you can see.

Perspective, light and shade, values, perspective, composition are all essential topics that are clearly taught with assigned exercises to practice on. Any subject, from landscapes to still lifes, portraits and figurative studies is taught. The best thing about this method is that all you really need to start with is a #2 pencil and a sheet of paper.

All the drawings in the book are in black and white as well as the values in between. He starts with the #2 pencil but than proceeds to cover charcoal,mwatercolor washes, opaque (gouache) washes, acrylic, and ink. Thenaddition of liquid mediums is a feature that I have notmseen in other books on drawing but it makes for a very helpful transition to painting in color.

Most art books seem to contain very few essential concepts or techniques and then simply use a lot of space explaining and expanding on them. In other words, most other art books have a lot of "filler". This book is different in that it covers each concept clearly and concisely so that more comcepts and techniques can be covered. A lot of concentrated teaching that the student soends time practicing. This make the book a great value! It truly covers everything needed to learn to draw what you see.

This is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced artists. An outstanding art book!

Rudy de Reyna is a past instructor with the Famous Artists School. All his books are worth having and studying (I like specially his book on acrylic painting--I have had it for years and still refer to it for guidance). Years back, when I took up drawing and painting, I got this book and drew and painted my way through it. That way, I got a good grounding in drawing techniques, composition and various media like charcoal, transparent watercolor, opaque watercolor, acrylic and ink. The book is really an overview of these areas with some specific advice for each.
There are many other books that specialize--like oil painting, landscapes, portraits, watercolor, composition/design, etc. But if you are interested in getting into artwork, this one is a great way to get started and try out various media possibilities.
Recommended.
