The Best Commentary on the Revelation

I have consulted almost 100 commentaries in my study on this grand book of the scriptures, but none possess the provocative and dynamic aspects as Jim's Revelation. As with all commentaries by Jim McGuiggan, he presents the material in a conversational manner, which exhibits his keen insights into the scriptures and tremendously helps the lay student. For years Revelation has been a perplexity and an enigma, which has prompted too many students to put it on the shelf and leave it to the "scholars." However, I suggest that with the help of this book, Revelation comes to life and enables the student to understand it in its historical and literary setting. On the other hand, many authors abuse this grand book in today's religious environment. McGuiggan will aptly quail the heresies that are being taught in many of these modern commentaries such as the doctrines of the "rapture," the "tribulation," and the "millennial reign." He will have the reader focus his thoughts of Revelation in their true Biblical sense--as literary figures to be understood symbolically. I am unable to do this book any sort of justice in the minor space I am allowed, but I do suggest that any student's library is incomplete if they do not own this book!

"ONE & ONLY" Amil/Pret book that doesn't bailout & jump ship

If you love to get your Revelation views from the front page of today's newspaper, then you will destest this book. If your favorite preachers are those who love to get their Reveltion views from the front page of today's newspaper, then you'll really desest this book. And if you think that Hal Lidsey and Tim LaHaye are significant scholars on Revelation, then you will absolutely hate this book.

BUT if you are a true student of the Bible and love expository teaching, then get ready to have your socks blessed off.

Jim takes a "preterist" view of Revelation and powerfully supports that view. He insists that the reader be consistent with the 12+ scriptures in Revelation that limit the time period for fulfillment of the book to a time that was "soon to take place". NOT "SOON" from 2005, but "SOON" from 79 AD. He also makes the "symbolic" nature of Revelation crystal clear.

And what makes his book the "top of the heap" of preterist commentaries on Revelation is his exposition of chapter 21. Jim is the "ONE & ONLY" perterist commentator who doesn't "bailout" or "jump ship" when it comes to chapter 21.

So to say that there isn't another commentary on Revelation like Jim's isn't an exaggeration. God bless. Mike

Hermeneutics

Great stuff. Although some things he doesn't cover enough I say. I don't have a list of pro's n con's really, I read this book over a year ago. It is on my list of good commentaries of the book of Revelation. However, I think that commentaries on this book are best when eat the meat of each one and spit out the bones, seeing which views and exegetics work best with harmony of Scripture and history. Jim's book is great, but don't stop with this one, also read "Revelation: Jesus Christ's Last Message of Hope" by Wayne Jackson as well as "An Eschatology of Victory" By J. Marcellus Kik. These are my top 3 recommendations for studying the apocalpyse. There are views by all that I don't believe are biblically irrefutable but we're saved by grace, afterall, not irrefutability in apocalypses. Enjoy your book!

An Entertaining, Illustrated Look at 2Pac

I was excited to have DEATH RAP arrive in the mail just yesterday. 2Pac was, is and will always be the greatest of all time in my eyes and what we have is a brief, illustrated glimpse at not only his life/death, but the effects of "Jim Crow" on the lives of young,black men, celeb and non-celeb, throughout history(ie, Malcolm X, Marvin Gaye, gang violence,etc). While the central point is the Pac's life, death, and perplexities, Jim Crow and racism are indicted as opposed to the work being given to conspiracy theory. The ONLY reason I rated it a 3 as opposed to a 4 or 5 is per the handling of gang violence in the piece,namely the presence of East Coast/Midwestern gang norms(ie, Crips playing to the right like GD's, Bloods being tatted on the left like Vicelords, 5 or 6 pt tatts,etc), and having experienced 1st hand how the game is played out West, I'll make it abundantly clear...Cali gangs do not operate under Midwestern norms(left, right, stars,etc),the presence of Midwestern/East Coast gang fashion in Cali depictions were fiction/generic to me and w/o understanding. Would've been a 5 had it been properly researched. But overall, a work of art. Makaveli, RIP.

better than i expected

i ordered it used cause i couldn't find it where i live (Greece) and in order to have it in a reasonable price with the rest of the shiping costs. when i got it on my hands i was very suprised because it was brand new.

this book was missing from my Tupac collection. it's what i give to my friends that want to know who Tupac was. all his life in a polished comic book. those who are looking for something deepper should look elsewhere. Good book to start with Tupac's life.

This book was a gift and much to my surprise it was extremely interesting. If you are a fan of comic books and hip-hop you'll love this as it incorporates history as well as surmised details leading up to Tupac's tragic death. The book even includes brief stories and illustrations about Malcolm X and Marvin Gaye's last days. If you like comics and love Tupac, this book is a must have.

a brilliant book!

I sat down in the living room. I read, turned the pages, read, skimmed, and read again. A long period passed.

Then I stood up and announced to the room, "this is a brilliant book!"

What more need I say?

I loved everything about it: the cover, the typesetting, the book design, the illustrations, and most of all, the commentary. I loved the analysis of the levels of simplicity and the distinction between quantity-simple and quality-simple. This is a deep and thoughtful book about a topic that sounds simple but is in fact deep and complex topic.

Very useful for the main sights

Since it focusses on a couple of places extensively, with handy, informative city walks and lots of info about eating, sleeping and transportation, but skips entire parts of the Scandinavic countries, this guide is very good, and perhaps even more useful than the Lonely Planet, if you only visit those places described in the book and not the rest. Not all major destinations are listed, e.g. Trondheim and Göteborg are missing, hence my 4 out of 5 stars, but even with those cities missing I though it a very useful book. The city walks are excellent and somehow we often ended up in restaurants that were listed.
I bought the ebook version which was very convenient on both phone and tablet, the only disadvantage being that you have to browse quite a bit between the city walk maps and the (very informative) written description.

Absolutely Essential

I especially liked Steve's Norway in a Nutshell trip you can take on your own. We skipped the expensive, shorter excursion offered by the cruise ship and saved enough to pay for all of our tour books. We visited all of the Scandinavian countries and used this book before docking in each major city, as well as in Tallinn, Estonia. Warning: the book makes you want to go back for more!

GREAT RESOURCE/GUIDE

My wife and I depart the first week in August for a Baltic Sea cruise aboard the Silver Whisper. Just found this new hard-cover book at B&N today. It has beautiful photos and information on many of the places we will be visiting. Not only are we enjoying it now and allowing to help our trip planning, but I can see it will be a book we will treasure for many years to come.

Chronicles of our Boomer Generation

I ordered this initially because the DVD of the same name does not have closed captions and I am hard of hearing. It is a good script, but the movie doesn't follow it exactly. Wendy Wasserstein is a playwright of my generation and I like how she captures so many of the dilemmas women I know went through at the times the book covers.

The Wendy Chronicles

My first foray into Wasserstein as a playwright. I've been familiar with her name and story for quite some time, but hadn't read her. So glad I did. This compilation of three Wasserstein pieces began with Uncommon Women and Others, continued with Isn't It Romantic and ended with the incredible Heidi Chronicles. Maybe the plays got better in succession or maybe I just became a more skilled Wasserstein reader as I experienced her more, I'm not sure. So much reflected women's struggles with the world and with themselves. Although I was never a 'Seven Sisters' girl, I remember those same feelings of wanting to take over the world while feeling inadequate to do much of anything. The Heidi Chronicles was a bittersweet end to the compilation, as it ends with Heidi's single-mom-adoption of a little girl and hope for the future, while the contemporary reader knows that Wasserstein herself could only enjoy her single-momness for a few years before dying of lymphoma.

Heidi Holland, with an Ivy League education and a Fulbright in England under her belt, is a lecturer in art history, an expert on female artists virtually unknown in their lifetimes, though their work is as good as that of the male painters who dominated their ages. Using the art history "hook" into the question of women and their roles--as they see their roles, as men see women's roles, and as women search for happiness within these roles--Wendy Wasserstein has written a thoughtful and very funny drama about the Baby Boom generation and the price its women have paid as they have searched for fulfillment.

Exploring Heidi Holland's life from the late 1960s to the 1990s, Wasserstein takes us from Heidi's high school and college days, as she grows in her thinking and view of her role in life, to her experiences with women's lib focus groups, the Eugene McCarthy campaign, the rise of AIDS, the gay movement, and ultimately Heidi's realization of what is important to her, not just professionally and philosophically, but personally and emotionally.

Wasserstein uses wit and a keen ear for dialogue to create quick, often humorous interchanges which advance the action and the feminist message without polemics. Heidi is, on the surface, a success by all external measurements, but she feels that she is missing something from her life. Professional success is not enough for her, a revelation that made this play somewhat controversial within the women's movement when it was first produced in 1988. Some feminists apparently believed Heidi's desire for emotional fulfillment through love to be a sellout to a male dominated culture.

Wasserstein emphasizes that women should be able to pursue both professional success and a personal life, however, and the rounded character of Heidi remains a nice contrast to the more strident and sometimes hostile female characters with whom she interacts on stage. Throughout the action, the play's high humor and absurdity are nicely balanced with scenes of sentiment and sorrowful revelation, and Wasserstein maintains her light touch without trivializing the issues. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1989, the play offers insights into significant social issues, gracefully presented so that they do not alienate the audience. Mary Whipple
