This treatise represents my primary research that assesses who would be most likely to develop PTSD when exposed to a traumatic life event (TLE). After working at Ground Zero, in the aftermath of 9/11, it became abundantly clear that an assessment method was necessary to triage individuals to determine service delivery priorities for stress-related issues. This work was generated with a prevention model in mind and attempted to develop a non- intrusive means of assessing at-risk status for those who are most likely to develop the most severe forms of this disease. A theoretical case for these predictions was proposed however, the overall results suggested an alternative interpretation. The individual facets that yielded the strongest relationship suggested that not introversion and neuroticism, but higher levels of trust with lower levels of competence; in conjunction with the amnestic form of dissociative coping established the strongest association with PTSD symptom severity. These results converge with a social-cognitive perspective of shattered assumptions (Janoff-Bulman, 1992)that may suggest core beliefs maintain symptom severity.

About the Author

Larry Reithmaier is a retired aerospace engineer who, while at McDonnell Douglas and Rockwell International, helped design and develop the F2H, F3, F86H, F100, F101, and F4 jet fighters, the B-1B bomber, and the Apollo and Skylab spacecrafts. The author of several technical books on aviation, he has also written the Aviation and Space Dictionary, Mach I and Beyond, the Private Pilot's Guide, and the Aircraft Repair Manual.

Dr. Ronald Sterkenburg started teaching at Purdue University in 1999 after a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy. He is an author or co-author of 10 books and more than 60 publications in national and international journals and conference proceedings. The focus of Dr. Sterkenburg’s research is the repair of metallic and composite aircraft structures. He is a certificated A & P mechanic, holds an Inspection Authorization (IA), and performs the duties of a Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME).

As a surgeon, I think of this book as the "Gray's Anatomy for Airframe Mechanics." Yes, it's fundamental, but knowing the fundamental facts makes for good work.
It contains material every airframe mechanic must know in the first year of his apprenticeship, but it will be of inestimable value to the many persons who participate in the expanding field of "Build Your Own Pane," even the best kits require some mechanical know-how and the proper use of the proper tools
No book reaches seven editions without having proved of value to an audience of significant size. The two expert authors describe with the aid of very clear line drawings and illustrations the nature of the tools and how to employ them (also how not!); they describe the nature of materials (not fabrics), and fixation devices (screws, bolts, pins, etc.). To this is added "plumbing, and electrical systems, and then non-destructive testing (NDT) and corrosion.
Altogether there is a wealth of primary material which every pilot and aircraft owner should be familiar with, and one day might save him from unnecessary forced landings.

Tony Mullen, PhD, has a broad background in CG-related work. Getting there is half the fun

I mainly bought this book for the chapters on programming blender with Python and though brief, they went beyond my expectations. The three chapters on the Blender Game Engine (including one on Python Power in the BGE) also exceeded my expectations and fill in some of the areas that are neglected in The Blender Game Kit. Incidentally, the definitive volumes on the subjects of Python for blender and the blender game engine have yet to be written.

The rest of the material here is on other subjects that I didn't find as interesting but the presentation is generally thorough and systematic and will pay off for anyone who has the time and patience to work through it.

Much of the material is introduced through exercises presented in detail, with step-by-step instructions generously illustrated with screen captures. My impression and biggest criticism of the book was that most of the exercises seemed too detailed and too time-consuming but if you don't do them you won't feel you have really learned the material and all you will have gained is a general idea of the power of the features under discussion. I am referring specifically to the exercises on compositing, sculpting, and texturing.

With many of the hard to follow, long and sometimes unexciting exercises, it surely would have been useful had the author provided narrated videos lessons in addition to the detailed written instructions. And while blend files of the completed exercises are provided on the book's CD, it would have also more useful had the author provided blend files at intermediate stages for comparison, to get back on track where we might have had some trouble, or so that we can skip a few of the more repetitive steps.

One unexpectedly nice feature about this book is that each chapter thoughtfully ends with a section labeled The Bottom Line that provides suggestions for further practice of the chapter material. Outstanding!

I've tried to write a couple of tutorials on blender topics for my own use to get a handle on difficult subjects - it's tough. The author earns my admiration for having the smarts and perseverence to craft difficult subjects into interesting, informative, and entertaining written lessons.

Not done reading yet, but excellent

I have been using blender for a few years. This book is excellent - a must read. I am just over half way through now.

I had been concerned before buying it that it might not apply to the forthcoming Blender 2.5/2.6, but actually there is a great deal of material geared toward helping you understand the transition and the changes to blender. As much as I follow the community on Blendernation, I found much that I did not yet know (and needed to) in this book.

So yeah, this book is not written for "noobs", but if you have any confidence with blender at all, this book will be of immense help.

covers all the *other* features in Blender

I just want to let people know that this book is not a follow-on to Tony Mullen's earlier book on modeling and animation in Blender in that you are not going to learn advanced modeling and animation. This book simply covers all the other features in Blender such as sculpting, texturing (with gimp), video editing, compositing, python scripting and the Blender Game Engine. So if thats what youre interested in, this is the book. I think the Blender community is very lucky to have an author such as Tony Mullen considering that the vast majority of Blender users are hobbiests. If Mullen were to write book on commercial 3D apps, he would quickly make a name for himself as the best 3D graphics author around.

It should be mentioned that this book is printed in B&W and that you have to look at the book's pics on the CD to see them in color. Why oh why cant publishers mangage to print graphics books in color?

Using historian Julius Ruska’s authoritative German translation, this book presents al-Razi’s Book of Secrets in English for the first time and analyzes it from the perspective of a modern scientific laboratory. The Kitab al-Asrar offers a view into the understanding of chemistry and procedure organization in the tenth-century Islamic world. Yet a careful reading yields even more than that. As a laboratory manual, it gives intriguing clues into Persian culture under the Abbasid caliphate: the relationship of teacher and student; attitudes toward safety, labor, and quantification; tools and logical problem-solving; commerce and the availability of luxury goods; and the value of the written word. About the Author
Gail Marlow Taylor began her graduate studies in history following a 25-year career in laboratory medicine. She completed her master’s degree in 2008 with a thesis entitled: “Al-Razi's Book of Secrets: The Practical Laboratory in the Medieval Islamic World.” This analysis, which included her English translation of the Book of Secrets, won the 2009 Outstanding Thesis Award at California State University, Fullerton. In June, 2014, she was awarded a doctorate in history at University of California, Irvine. Her dissertation analyzed the reception of New World medicinal plants in sixteenth-century Germany, and included a year of research in Wolfenbuettel on a Fulbright Scholarship. She lives with her husband Charles in Coto de Caza, California, where she enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren and writing her blog, “History’s Edge.”
