This Book is HILARIOUS!

I bought this book many years ago at a book store. I was reading it in the store and just had to buy it!
The humor is droll and plays on human quirks. We all may be guilty of doing a few of them. It really allows
one to laugh at the quirks of oneself or someone you may know. It brings up many things that I would personally have never thought of in a super funny way.

It's meant to be ironic not mean spirited. I related to a couple of things in it. I found it
so fun to have a laugh at my own expense. ahah! It also made me think how silly some things really are.
Good stuff, very cleaver. Good therapy for the pessimistic you may know in your life. Good gift for someone like this... I am more optimistic by nature. I think this could perhaps really help the 'self made miserable makers'
If they are not too miserable to read this.... It's a super fast read.

I personally found it to be a riot to read. Fun book - all that is required is a healthy droll/ironic sense of humor.

Somewhere over the years I loaned it out an it didn't return. I repurchased again and found it just as funny as the first time I read it.

Excellent resource

This is a great resource for medical professionals also starting in the NICU. It provideo a handy section about on call problems for easy reference. I've bought several nicu books and this one is the most helpful.

Best for residents

I heard really good things about this book from practicing colleagues. It's not as good as I had expected. Fine for a resident, but for the small town pediatrician in the trenches dealing with sick neonates an airplane ride away from the nearest NICU, not so good. Seems to sacrifice breadth for depth.

great for students

This text is a great resource for all, but especially for my Neonatal nurse practitioner students. Because it is written from the bases of a clinical symptom or sign it is very clear how to formulate differential diagnosis. The Differential lists are comprehensive and very well outlined.

About the Author
STEVEN O'HARA, Professor of Architectural Engineering and Licensed Engineer            Professor O'Hara received his Master of Architectural Engineering from Oklahoma State University, and has been a member of the teaching faculty at the School of Architecture since 1988.  His primary areas of interest include the design and analysis of masonry, steel and timber structures, with special interest in classical numerical structural analysis and the design of concrete structures.  Professor O'Hara is one of four faculty members in the Architectural Engineering program at OSU, and as such teaches courses in the AE program at all levels; he enjoys his close mentoring relationship with the students in the AE program at OSU, as he also performs the role of their academic advisor.  Outside the OSU classroom, Professor O'Hara is an Affiliate Professor of Civil Engineering and Architecture in "Project Lead the Way", a nationwide program for high school students.  He trains the high school teachers responsible for introducing engineering principles into the secondary curriculum, though project based learning, and has authored the workbook for the curriculum.            As a faculty member, Professor O'Hara has received numerous awards; in 2001 he was the honored recipient of the first Melvin R. Lohmann Professorship, in 1999 he received the Chi Epsilon Excellence in Teaching Award, and in 1995 he was recognized as the Halliburton Excellent Young Teacher for the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology at OSU.

Straightforward and efficient

I found this book to be the best resource for getting my studying started and understanding the scope of all the exams. I also used a few Kaplan guides, which I found to be overkill. For a few of the exams, I used the specific Ballast books, but I only used them because I was able to borrow them for free. They were great as well, but provided more questions and exams than I could have ever found the time or desire to pursue.
If you're preparing to start taking exams, this book is the best resource, and will save you a lot of time. If you think you're weak in a particular area, use this book first, and then consider supplemental information/books from Ballast or Kaplan.
btw, I passed all my exams the first time around.

Consistently good study guide

This is a great study guide- very comprehensive. I've used this as my primary study guide and have been doing well on the ARE. I think it's well written and isn't so dry that it's impossible to get through. I'm giving 4 stars because of some things I didn't like regarding formatting/ information location (that resulted in being unprepared for some questions).

Be sure to review the actual ARE test guidelines from NCARB. The chapters split the subject matter up fairly well, but there are a few where the material is in the wrong section (i.e. Vertical Transportation should be in "Building Systems" chapter, but is in the "BD&CS" chapter).

There are 2 chapters at the very end - Chapters 55 & 56 - Code info- and they should absolutely be the first chapters in the book!!!! They are not and I just realized, 3 tests in, that these chapters exist. It's my fault for not reading the T of C, but I think they're not placed properly. This is critical stuff on most every test and doesn't belong hidden in the back.

OK that is all- would definitely recommend. I went through each chapter and made my own flashcards for review a few days prior to the test. It's a lot of trees, but effective!

REGARDLESS OF WHAT PEOPLE SAY THIS BOOK IS TERRIBLE. ITS NOT ORGANIZED TO NCARB'S EXAM FORMAT. BUYING THIS BOOK WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST MISTAKES OF MY LIFE. I ONLY PASSED THE EXAM WHEN I BOUGHT OTHER STUDY MATERIALS LIKE ARCHITECT EXAM PREP.

A great manual for preventative maintenance

I'd like to say first off that there is no such thing as an all-encompassing manual that covers EVERYTHING about a car. I think some people have unrealistic expectations. That said, I just got this book and can already tell it will become an indispensable part of my Benz repair collection. If this book covers your year/model I would definitely not hesitate to buy this book.

Pros:
- Great first book because basic maintenance is thouroughly covered (almost exhaustive) WITH PICTURES/ARROWS
- well-taken pics (not grainy or ambiguous)
- well organized
- differentiates between different models (V8, V6, diesel, etc.)
- amount of content is well above average

Cons:
- some areas have drawings and not pics
- no real troubleshooting advice (its more informative of what to expect when taking something apart)

excellent book for Mercedes E class 1986-95

If you have any intentions of buying a mid 80's to mid 90's E class Mercedes Benz you owe it to yourself to get a copy of this book. Well written by a Mercedes tech and shop owner of many years, covering a model that is still considered among the better designed and built Mercedes Benz cars. Just because a car is newer doesn't always mean it is better, with this E class Mercedes being a good example. If you are not the owner of this E class, buy the book, read through it and you soon will be looking for a good example of this E class and buy it! Whether one of the 300E's with the 6 cylinder engine, a 400E with the zippy V8, of if you are fortunate enough to find one of the rare 500E/E500 from 1992-94, you will enjoy any of them, and need this book to guide you along the way.

Great, useful.

I was a little worried about this because of the reviews, but I will tell you this is definitely a good book to get if you need to work on your Mercedes. It may not have everything, it assumes you know how to jack up a car, and know when to remove a tire. It is not a step by step guide for someone with no knowledge of cars. People claiming to be mechanics leaving reviews are just straight up lying. There are going to be projects that I am sure you will not find in this book. Its always good to buy more than one book for any vehicle you care about and plan on working on.

Be warned

First a disclaimer - this is a wonderful book, one of the finest textbooks of pathology ever written. Rather, my complaint is regarding the quality of the printing - the book I received is a facsimile (at full price) with poor elementary printing errors - badly done margins, poor quality pictures, and cheap paper - the whole book has a 'scanned-and-reprinted' look. Even if it were half price I would be dissatisfied by this shabby quality.

So if you want to buy this book (and I highly recommend it), buy it directly from the publisher or from somewhere else.

Fantastic for general pathology !

This is absolutely a great book. It has a lot of positive aspects: 1. easy to read 2. enough details 3. nice anecdotes which are written in smaller letters 4. easy to find what your looking for by bold, italic and underlined words 5. good table contents 6. good diagrams as well 7. at the end of each chapter a good summery
You may ask "If it's so good why 4 stars instead of 5?". Well, the pictures are in black and white. I like coloured books myself.

Great book, obviously. Very well translated. Cover image on the one I bought, and the one on here was different, but I like my cover so no big deal. A little bit smaller than I imagined, like the length. I'm not inclined to read small books, as the print hurts my eyes. But, overall it was great. Couldn't recommend highly enough.

Didn't get to Paris that year to pick up a copy. I have the entire series in French. I am a French teacher. All the books are just as interesting in French as they are in English. What an imagination.
