Flexible, Reliable Software: Using Patterns and Agile Development (Chapman & Hall/CRC Textbooks in Computing), by Henrik B. Christensen

Flexible, Reliable Software: Using Patterns and Agile Development guides students through the software development process. By describing practical stories, explaining the design and programming process in detail, and using projects as a learning context, the text helps readers understand why a given technique is required and why techniques must be combined to overcome the challenges facing software developers.

The presentation is pedagogically organized as a realistic development story in which customer requests require introducing new techniques to combat ever-increasing software complexity. After an overview and introduction of basic terminology, the book presents the core practices, concepts, tools, and analytic skills for designing flexible and reliable software, including test-driven development, refactoring, design patterns, test doubles, and responsibility driven and compositional design. It then provides a collection of design patterns leading to a thorough discussion of frameworks, exemplified by a graphical user interface frramework (MiniDraw). The author also discusses the important topics of configuration management and systematic testing. In the last chapter, projects lead students to design and implement their own frameworks, resulting in a reliable and usable implementation of a large and complex software system complete with a graphical user interface.

This text teaches  how to design, program, and maintain flexible and reliable software. Installation guides, source code for the examples, exercises, and projects can be found on the author’s website.

Review

…This book brings together a careful selection of topics that are relevant, indeed crucial, for developing good quality software with a carefully designed pedagogy that leads the reader through an experience of active learning. The emphasis in the content is on practical goals―how to construct reliable and flexible software systems―covering many topics that every software engineer should have studied. The emphasis in the method is on providing a practical context, hands-on projects, and guidance on process. … The text discusses not only what the end product should be like, but also how to get there. … I know that this book will be a great help for many of my students on the path from a novice programmer to a mature, professional software developer.
―From the Foreword by Michael Kölling, originator of the BlueJ and Greenfoot environments, co-author of the best-selling Objects First with Java, and author of the best-selling Introduction to Programming with Greenfoot

An interesting set of case studies and application of patterns in TDD (title is somewhat misleading)
By Prof
I evaluated this book for my graduate class on advanced software design. I'm still ambivalent about making it a required text.

Strengths: Code examples in Java. Interesting reasoning of applying patterns, especially with respect to variability (a dimension I find is often minimized in many texts). Addresses iterative development with testing, with real examples and detailed analyses of risks. There are exercises, which are useful in a course environment. The reasoning for applying patterns (or not) is quite detailed. The projects (pay station software development) are realistic, although the problem domain might be more suited for people familiar with these devices (in Denmark). The Figure 1 in the "Tour of the book" gives a great map of the case studies, patterns, etc. It's easy to go to specific applications of patterns (the book is quite modular).

Weaknesses: When I compare its price to other books on Agile Design and OOD patterns (e.g. Craig Larman's UML 2 and Patterns from 2005), this book is overpriced (almost double the price). There's an eBook option (Kindle) but it's the same price as the hard cover (that doesn't encourage sustainable development). The author introduces a 3-2-1 method that is actually a new name for an old thing. He makes no reference to Protected Variations coined by Larman (which is the same as the 3-2) or Indirection (which is the 1), but oddly cites Larman on a less-important coining of "Don't talk to strangers" for the Law of Demeter pattern. Variability is a big part of this book, but I feel the author doesn't do a good job of showing who else contributed along these lines. The text refers to "stories" from XP, but there's little guidance on how to write stories (despite Agile being in the title). Reliability is also exagerrated. It's defined (borrowed from ISO 9126) but mostly this books is based on writing code that is bug-free via Test-Driven Development in Agile (good material, but not sufficient for true reliability). Reliability also concerns dealing with failures in the software that occur because of environmental problems, for example. This book is not about fault tolerance, even though Reliability in the title might imply it. Again, books such as Larman's address fault tolerance specifically and discuss patterns for achieving it through redundancy.

Good textbook for Hands-on Applications Programming class
By Matt DeJongh
I used this textbook for an upperclass Applications Programming course with approximately 15 students. The students and I enjoyed the book and found the material engaging, understandable, and helpful for developing good programming practices. The book is a good fit for a course which builds on previous courses in programming, data structures, and algorithms. It teaches students Test Driven Development, Design Patterns, and Software Lifecycle topics in the context of a significant hands-on programming project. It is well-suited to a team-oriented approach, and fits nicely into a series of two-week iterations in a 15 week semester, so students get a feel for an Agile Software Development process. The online Teacher Resources are very useful and useable, and include Lecture Slides, code examples, and suggestions for how the material should be used in several course formats.

The Art of Fermentation: An In-Depth Exploration of Essential Concepts and Processes from around the World, by Sandor Ellix Katz

Winner of the 2013 James Beard Foundation Book Award for Reference and Scholarship, and a New York Times bestseller, The Art of Fermentation is the most comprehensive guide to do-it-yourself home fermentation ever published. Sandor Katz presents the concepts and processes behind fermentation in ways that are simple enough to guide a reader through their first experience making sauerkraut or yogurt, and in-depth enough to provide greater understanding and insight for experienced practitioners.

While Katz expertly contextualizes fermentation in terms of biological and cultural evolution, health and nutrition, and even economics, this is primarily a compendium of practical information―how the processes work; parameters for safety; techniques for effective preservation; troubleshooting; and more.

With two-color illustrations and extended resources, this book provides essential wisdom for cooks, homesteaders, farmers, gleaners, foragers, and food lovers of any kind who want to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for arguably the oldest form of food preservation, and part of the roots of culture itself.

Readers will find detailed information on fermenting vegetables; sugars into alcohol (meads, wines, and ciders); sour tonic beverages; milk; grains and starchy tubers; beers (and other grain-based alcoholic beverages); beans; seeds; nuts; fish; meat; and eggs, as well as growing mold cultures, using fermentation in agriculture, art, and energy production, and considerations for commercial enterprises. Sandor Katz has introduced what will undoubtedly remain a classic in food literature, and is the first―and only―of its kind.

Review

Library Journal-

This is not a line-by-line recipe cookbook, but it contains detailed instructions on fermenting (or creating via fermentation) nearly every imaginable food or beverage. After a foreword by Michael Pollan, Katz ("Wild Fermentation") explores the scientific basis of fermentation, then gives details for creating everything from yogurts to prosciutto to wines, beer, and kombucha. He emphasizes how fermentation influenced human development. Used to preserve food, it affected human biology so that humans could eat foods that would be poisonous otherwise, and it had an impact on global human culture as a reflection of indigenous cultural identity. Simply put, fermentation allows lactic acid bacteria naturally found in the air to overcome and exclude bacteria that are harmful to humans, and it increases advantageous chemical compounds, such as vitamins, in the process. There is a generous photo section of tools, containers, and processes; along with fascinating electron microscope photos of bacteria, which convey a sense of wonder at the unseen world of fermentation. VERDICT: Katz takes fermentation down to the molecular level while keeping it conversational and accessible to the generalist. Fermentation foodies will be ecstatic.

"The only resource guide you will ever need."--Jenn Garbee, LA Weekly

"The Art of Fermentation is an extraordinary book, and an impressive work of passion and scholarship. It lays the foundation for fermenting all kinds of foods, and whoever reads it will be able to negotiate any recipe for ferments (and conquer any lingering nervousness about fermentation) with impunity. I am so impressed - and ready to begin! Thank you, Sandor Katz."--Deborah Madison, author of Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone and Local Flavors

"Sandor Katz has captured the essence of fermentation in this new book, which bubbles over with scientific, historical, and practical information about humankind's first biotechnology and earth's first energy source. The mystery and sensory allure of naturally fermented products ranging from fruit, honey, milk, all manner of starchy grain, tuber and stalk--even fish and meat--are laid bare and enthusiastically and lucidly brought to life for both epicure and the do-at-homer."--Patrick E. McGovern, Scientific Director, Biomolecular Archaeology Laboratory, University of Pennsylvania Museum, and author of Ancient Wine and Uncorking the Past

"The Art of Fermentation appeals to our personal and fundamental well being, with a thoroughly engaging account of wild, tamed, and unaccounted-for microorganisms. Based on theory, science, and practical observations, Sandor Katz casts thousands of dots onto the pages for us to connect with our own experiences and interests. There are things he writes in this book that are relevant to everyone. Whether we are at war or peace with the tiny creatures we call microorganisms, we can't help but conclude that they are the building blocks of the communities we observe as organisms. His obsession with ferment is contagious. With the flip of a page it's easy to find oneself discovering our own personal journey embedded in this thoroughly engaging book."--Charlie Papazian, author of The Complete Joy of Homebrewing and many other books on beer

"This is, quite simply, the finest book on fermentation available. It is comprehensive, erudite, and surprisingly profound. Sandor Katz is the guru of a large and growing tribe of fermentation enthusiasts and this book will awaken you to the thrilling world of benign bacteria all around us. Not only do they provide us with pickles, cheese, bread, alcohol - but our existence depends on bacteria and they deserve our reverence and respect."--Ken Albala, Food Historian and Coauthor of The Lost Arts of Hearth and Home: The Luddite's Guide to Domestic Self-Sufficiency

"Sandor Katz has proven himself to be the king of fermentation with this new book, an exhaustive yet very readable compendium of fermentation wisdom and techniques from around the world. A must-have in the libraries of anyone interested in food and nutrition."--Sally Fallon Morell, President, The Weston A. Price Foundation

"The Art of Fermentation is a remarkable testimony to the astonishing passion that Sandor Katz has for all matters fermentative. History, science, and simple how-to wisdom are woven together in this extensive journey through the amazing diversity of foods and beverages that are founded upon fermentation."--Dr. Charlie Bamforth, Professor, Department of Food Science and Technology, University of California, Davis and author of Food, Fermentation and Microorganisms

"The Art of Fermentation is much more than a cookbook...Sure, it tells you how to do it, but much more important, it tells you what it means, and why an act as quotidian and practical as making your own sauerkraut represents nothing less than a way of engaging with the world. Or rather, with several different worlds, each nested inside the other: the invisible world of fungi and bacteria; the community in which you live; and the industrial food system that is undermining the health of our bodies and the land. This might seem like a large claim for a crock of sauerkraut, but Sandor Katz's signal achievement in this book is to convince you of its truth. To ferment your own food is to lodge an eloquent protest-of the senses-against the homogenization of flavors and food experiences now rolling like a great, undifferentiated lawn across the globe. It is also a declaration of independence from an economy that would much prefer we were all passive consumers of its commodities, rather than creators of unique products expressive of ourselves and the places where we live."--Michael Pollan, from the Foreword

About the Author

Sandor Ellix Katz is a fermentation revivalist. A self-taught experimentalist who lives in rural Tennessee, his explorations in fermentation developed out of overlapping interests in cooking, nutrition, and gardening. This book, originally published in 2003, along with his The Art of Fermentation (2012) and the hundreds of fermentation workshops he has taught around the world, have helped to catalyze a broad revival of the fermentation arts. Newsweek called Wild Fermentation "the fermenting Bible," and The New York Times calls Sandor “one of the unlikely rock stars of the American food scene.” For more information, check out his website www.wildfermentation.com.

Art of Fermentation vs. Wild Fermentation
By Jonathan Smith
There have been several excellent reviews that list the strengths of The Art of Fermentation. I can only add one thing - the author does an excellent job of citing his sources. I really appreciate that he does so - it allows me to go back and check for new, updated research and expand my reading. I particularly appreciate this in his section on fermentation and health. He adamantly does not claim fermented foods area a panacea and is skeptical of some of the touted benefits of various foods (kombucha as a cure for diabetes, for example). He argues, quite successfully, that fermented foods have their place in a well balanced, healthy, diet and provides the studies, traditions, and first-hand knowledge that demonstrates why.

For those who are wondering which book would be the better choice, this book is not just an expanded version of Wild Fermentation. It's a different take on the subject that goes in depth in the process and concepts behind fermentation. Many different types of fermentation using different bases - grains, vegetables, fruit, etc - are explored. Be aware that this is not a cookbook or an introductory text, however. Traditional recipes are scarce. If you are looking for "add X tablespoon of salt to Y amount of cabbage" you will be disappointed. If you want to know about different fermentation methods used around the world so you can branch out in your own culinary experiments, this is the book for you.

If you're an absolute novice, Wild Fermentation is probably the better starting place. It gives recipes and walks you through the steps more than The Art of Fermentation. Once you've made a few things and want to know more, the Art of Fermentation will really come into it's own!

Introduction To Post-Pasteurianism
By Brandon Curtis
First off: this book is beautiful. Hardcover, with a series of full-color plates 1/3rd and 2/3rds through. For only twice the price of a flimsy paperback, you're investing in five hundred solidly-constructed pages that will last.

And a good thing, because this book is destined to be a classic.

You don't need to have read Katz' other work, Wild Fermentation: The Flavor, Nutrition, and Craft of Live-Culture Foods, to understand, appreciate, and use this book - it stands alone. If you already own Wild Fermentation, don't be put off by the duplication of some recipes in the Table of Contents. Yes, sauerkraut, kimchi, and pickles are in here, but every section is greatly expanded with much more information and many more references. (Ever thought of using a layer of cooking oil as an airlock? Neither had I, but I'm going to try it!)

Speaking of references... the Resources, Glossary, and Works Cited chapters could keep you busy for a few years.

And yes: you will use this book. As Michael Pollan states in the well-written foreword, this is not one of those cookbooks you buy for the nice pictures and keep on your coffee table. This is a project manual. Fermentation is something you have to experience to understand, and Katz give you absolutely everything you need to get started. The first 67 pages are devoted entirely to the beginner, focusing not on specific recipes but on answering the inevitable questions: "WHY would I want to ferment food? is it safe? what equipment and general expertise do I need?"

Again from Pollan: "Katz writes about the transformative power of fermentation with such infectious enthusiasm that he makes you want to try things just to see what happens." This is so true. Even if you don't initially intend to, many of these 'recipes' are so simple and unintimidating (hard apple cider, mead, sauerkraut and its derivatives, sourdough) that it's hard to resist the urge to pick up a box of Mason jars and some fresh produce the next time you're at the grocery store. Many of us are experimenters at heart, and fermentation is the perfect mix of art and science to tap into this nature and inspire all kinds of crazy projects.

Already the neighborhood King of Kraut? I guarantee that this book will still have something for you. Chapter 12 - "Fermenting Meat, Fish, and Eggs" isn't enough? Turn to Chapter 13, for a short but serious discussion of what it takes to turn a fermentation hobby into a small business. Notes about scaleup, HACCP plans, and licensing are cool to read about, though I have no plans to open a tempeh factory anytime soon. Or how about Chapter 14 - "Non-Food Applications of Fermentation"? Again, I don't live on a farm, but it is neat to read about compost, silage, and bioremediation. (Surprise: Katz doesn't buy into corn ethanol biofuels)

While this is by no means a biology textbook, the scientific content is much improved over Wild Fermentation. Chapter 1 - "Fermentation as a Coevolutionary Force" is, in general, accurate and well-referenced. Katz is not a formally-trained scientist, but he does not shy away from technical details when they are helpful for understanding, and he shows respect for the scientific method and its results. See, for instance, his discussion of 'homofermentative' and 'heterofermentative' organisms in vegetable fermentation (pg 96), or of commercial starter cultures (pg 132).

If you subsist on white bread and margarine and bleach your cutting boards after every use, fermentation may not be the hobby for you. The first time I skimmed some strangely-textured yeast off of a crock of fermenting beets, I have to admit I was a little skeptical what those beets would look like when I pulled them out (they were absolutely delicious). While some of my more imaginative fermentation adventures have yielded delicious results, a few have been downright terrible (yep, ate them anyway!). If you don't see any issue with carving a bit of mold off some cheese or a piece of fruit instead of throwing it out, then you probably have what it takes.

Many (most?) of the poor reviews on Wild Fermentation are from people taking issue with Katz' lifestyle or philosophies. Many of his philosophical discussions in this book are backed up with hard science and references, so even those who found Wild Fermentation to be overbearing may find this new book to be more palatable. If you have some problem with the fact that Katz has HIV (he states this outright in the new book, and includes a sidebar about how fermented foods may be helpful but they are not a disease cure), do the rest of us a favor and keep it to yourself.

I've been experimenting with fermentation for about a year, relying mostly on Wild Fermentation and a substantial collection of online resources. I've only had this book for a week, and I've already had tons of fun and learned a lot. When I'm finished with my read-through, this book will definitely be making its rounds among my friends. A great reference and a worthwhile investment - highly recommended.

Best Book on Fermentation Currently Available

Fermentation was frankly something I had little to no experience or interest in until a few years ago....even then it was a slow progression. For health reasons (we're not getting any younger) we started taking an active interest in food - both the quality of the food and the preparation practices. The more we learned, the more we started cooking, baking and making our own food.

Bread was perhaps one of the very first things we took the time to make from scratch and soon the bread baking became a weekly tradition. Fresh baked bread is so delicious, warm and comforting. Of course, that led to grinding our own flour and since bread is so much like beer - my spouse began experimenting with home brewed beer and wine and even soda. It wasn't long before something always seemed to be brewing in the kitchen and at least one of us, was quickly becoming a fermentation fan.

Over those few years, our diet, shopping habits, food choices and preparation methods changed fairly radically from what we had thought was a decent diet to an all organic, homemade diet with local produce when possible. It was during that time I started hearing more and more about the benefits of fermentation of other foods - but frankly, not having grown up around anything remotely related to food preparation, I had no idea what was/wasn't fermented. In fact, I thought pickles were always made with vinegar and canned - I had no idea they were fermented. Ditto for sauerkrout or oodles of other items. Somewhere along the line, I came across Sandor's first book on fermentation and purchased it. It was NOT love at first sight...in fact, after the first read, I thought it sounded horrible (rotted food?!) and set it aside for at least another year.

Then by chance, I happened to taste some REAL pickles..then fermented salsa and several other things that just knocked my socks off. I pulled that book out and decided to give it a try. Low and behold, it worked like a charm!

Soon I was buying big fermentation pots and since then we have become regular consumers of fermented products made a home. I then bought the book and video set and several other books on fermentation...in fact, by this point, I probably own most of the major books about fermentation. So, when this came up as an advanced order option, I purchased it right away although I wasn't sure what to expect. It was delivered early and right from the start, it is obvious this book is MUCH larger than previous books. It provides a exemplary overview of fermentation from both a historical perspective as well as current uses around the globe. The information expands upon the understanding of fermentation in a dramatic way. It's both interesting and informative. Without a doubt, it's one of the best books I've read on the subject and I've read a LOT of them!

Now, if you are just wanting an introduction to fermentation with a few quick and easy recipes' and examples, the older books by Katz are probably still your best choice. On the other hand, if you are a person that likes to understand a topic in depth when starting something new, this may be more to your liking.

Existing fermentation fans will ABSOLUTELY want to purchase this new book for the expanded knowledge, information and insight. It will not disappoint!

May your beer always bubble, your bread always rise -
Your pickles always pucker and your crock never demise!
Happy fermenting folks!

An Interview with bell hooks, author of Feminism is for Everybody: Passionate Politics

SOUTH END PRESS: Your work on radical black feminism has been an inspiration for many young feminists of color, and you yourself were in your early 20s when you wrote your first book, Ain't I a Woman. What differences do you see in the political and cultural climate that young progressive activists face today, compared to when you were formulating your own politics?

BELL HOOKS: One of the major differences I see in the political climate today is that there is less collective support for coming to critical consciousness-in communities, in institutions, among friends. For example, when I was coming to feminist consciousness-as one aspect of my political consciousness-at Stanford University, there was a tremendous buzz about feminism throughout the campus. Women were organizing in the dorms, women were resisting biased curriculum, all of those things. So, it really offered a kind of overall support for coming to consciousness, whereas what so frequently happens now in academic settings is that people feel much more that they don't have this kind of collective support.

SEP: What do you think has contributed to that change?

BH: The institutionalization of Black Studies, Feminist Studies, all of these things led to a sense that the struggle was over for a lot of people and that one did not have to continue the personal consciousness-raising and changing of one's viewpoint.

SEP: Could you describe some of the influences on your own politicization? In your writing you have focused very much on your development as a woman, as a writer, and as a critic and political thinker. Could you describe that process?

BH: One of the issues that I continually write about is that the words we use to define political positions-whether we talk about being on the left or being feminist-do not mean that people may not have arrived at positions of resistance that could be clearly described by that language before they come to that language. In my case, I've talked a great deal about how growing up in a very patriarchal household was the setting for my development of resistance. But it was not until the organi

“a most extraordinary book... Her courage and insight are really phenomenal. And hooks emphasizes that we always need to consider class and race when we discuss gender, She has the courage of her convictions and such emotional and intellectual autonomy. And she was so young—32—when she wrote it. It’s just remarkable.” — O Magazine “Ashley Judd, Books That Made a Difference”

From the Back Cover
Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center established bell hooks as one of feminism's most vital and influential voices. A new preface by the author introduces the second edition of this essential classic to a new generation of feminist readers, while reminding seasoned activists of the need for continual, critical reflection.

This carefully argued and powerfully inspirational work is a comprehensive examination of the core issues of sexual politics, including political solidarity among women, men as partners in struggle, and the feminist movement to end violence. Always engaging and frequently provocative, hooks combines an accessible style with critical insight to offer a vision of feminism rooted in compassion, respect, and integrity.

About the Author
Frantz Fanon (1925-61) was born in the French Caribbean island of Martinique. He studied medicine and psychiatry in France and worked in a hospital in Algeria between 1953 and 1956. He passionately identified with Algeria's armed struggle for independence and this led him to write The Wretched of the Earth (1961) which became a manifesto for the Third World. Black Skin, White Masks was first published in France in 1952.

wow!
By ethan prague
A fantastic, indispensable book that should be read by everyone who has eyes and half a cerebellum. A great starting point for people who, like me, were interested in feminism but always felt the whole Betty Friedan liberate-the-homemaker aspect they taught us in highschool was a bit shallow, moot, and furthermore nonapplicable to males. Hooks' voice is distinctively wise, startling, discerning, and pragmatic; conceptually, it really makes you view the way society works with new eyes, even if none of the indictments really come as a surprise. Although many readers not predisposed to radical politics may have trouble swallowing all of her ideas in this era of ultra-conservatism, this book really does have something for everybody. It's obvious the reader below calling this book baseless propaganda didn't really understand it, for harmful power hegemonies are still as central to American social and political conduct as when it was first published twenty years ago.

A worthwhile Read

This is a good primer or blueprint for young African American feminists and those looking to understand the intersection between feminism and the African American female experience.

This book changed my life twice!
By Tiffany L Taylor
It did. Once as an undergrad and then again when I walked out of my corporate america job to go back to school. I was searching for something else in my life, wanting to quit, and there it was sitting on my shelf as it had for several years. I am a white woman and a lesbian and I must be honest and say I had never really been motivated to action reading anything in feminism, until I read this book. The first chapter takes you by storm. This book is essential for any woman, well for any person. It is an introduction into "things are not always what they seem" and the beginning of viewing the world with a critical eye. Even for us liberals there are many things that we do to contribute to a racists society, knowingly or unknowingly. So I am in graduate school and I have bell hooks to thank for a lot of my motivation to be here. Read this book and read her others(if you can keep up with the number she writes!), she is amazing and inspirational, an Audre Lorde for a new generation who were not fortunate enough to be motivated by the late warrior poet. Hooks challenges us all as Lorde did when she spoke of "doing her work asking you are you doing yours?"

Perfect for everyday conversation/getting around
By Erik
If you are traveling to Japan for a day, a week, or even a month or two, Japanese For Dummies will be perfect for you. The 3 audio CDs come with a booklet with all of the vocabulary, inlcuding little tips here and there. What I do is I make flash cards for the words, practice memorizing them, and then quiz myself with the audio CDs (which of course I rip and put on my computer and mp3 player). It's perfect because you can store the audio files on your mp3 player and quiz yourself anywhere anytime.

I will be in Japan for a little under a month, and after a week of practice, I can already introduce myself and hold a very simple conversation. There is no way you can learn the language in less than a month, let alone less than a year. That's why this product is so great. It comes with about 37 sections, each one building on the next.

CD1 has saying hello and goodbye, introducing yourself, important nouns to know, simple question words, an overview of numbers, etc
CD2 has adjectives, verbs, the creation of simple sentences
CD3 has specifics, like things you should know in the office, a restaurant, the bank, hotel, etc

I have tried the Berlitz Japanese in 30 days and a few other Audio/Books and they just did not compare. The others had very poor audio and a learning style I just couldn't deal with. The audio on Japanese for Dummies is extremely clear and easy to understand. In addition, Japanese For Dummies is more useful for learning by memorization, not so much understanding the grammar perfectly. However, If you put 3-4 weeks into this, an hour a day, you will be able to survive in the streets of Japan!

Forget all the reviews except the 3 star reviews
By Remrie Arrie
This is a great product in spite of me giving it a 3 star review.

I gave it 3 stars for 2 reasons
#1 - It is grossly inadequate in terms of content. 3CD's are way too short
#2 - It is not socially correct at times.

Example. "I" in Japanese, they use "Watashi". What they don't point out is that's a feminine reference for women referring to themselves. Men say "Boku" when saying "I". I've had conversations with friends who are Japanese immigrants to the U.S who talk about funny experiences listening to American men speak Japanese who say "Watashi" because it makes them come across as sounding gay in the homosexual sense.

It won't clarify Nana and Shichi both mean Seven, and it won't clarify any other technical nuances.

It's worth knowing a little Japanese before you pick this up but it's a start over anything and it's well worth it. I've done a little Rosetta stone and have been teaching myself off and on; despite the boring nature of this CD, it has helped a lot. I've listened to all the CD's countless times and I skip back and forth randomly. I'll listen to the 1st CD 10 times, go through the others 10 times, and go back to the first one and repeat a single track 10 times because I realized what it is teaching more and more, or I notice a lesson being taught I don't remember hearing before even though I listened to it 10 times. Break up the monotony to give yourself the attention to catch the lessons and the nuances of the language.

It's worth a start, but don't expect to be able to use it in any social setting. You will still have the language skills of a brick no matter how much you listen to it.

A word of caution: Do not think of yourself as a dummy. Otherwise you will never learn anything. "I think, therefore I am" is extremely true statement. Even more so true is "What my peers think, so shall I become." Which is why it's critically important to surround yourself with the people who will help you grow and not pull you back. Make friends in/from japan, online and offline, switch all the language settings on your computer and websites to Japanese (try it on Facebook)

Have fun. relax. Go for it!
Ganbattene!

Chaffin's Occupational Biomechanics, by Bernard J. Martin, Maury A. Nussbaum, Gunnar B. J. Andersson

Occupational Biomechanics, Fifth Edition provides the foundations and tools to assemble and evaluate biomechanical processes. It describes the mechanical side of ergonomics. This revision of a well-established graduate-level text enables the book to stay current with research and development in occupational biomechanics. All chapters are updated to reflect recent data (anthropometry for example).  New methods in biomechanics, simulation, movement recording, job analysis, hand activity, and muscle fatigue have been inserted.  Rarely used job analysis methods (example: posture targeting) are removed and replaced by more contemporary methods (example: Hand Activity Level). Since worker selection is no longer a predominant issue, this part has been removed and the section on administrative controls is developed further. Review questions are updated and/or expanded.

The Science of Evil: On Empathy and the Origins of Cruelty, by Simon Baron-Cohen

Borderline personality disorder, autism, narcissism, psychosis, Asperger's: All of these syndromes have one thing in common--lack of empathy. In some cases, this absence can be dangerous, but in others it can simply mean a different way of seeing the world.

In The Science of Evil Simon Baron-Cohen, an award-winning British researcher who has investigated psychology and autism for decades, develops a new brain-based theory of human cruelty. A true psychologist, however, he examines social and environmental factors that can erode empathy, including neglect and abuse.

Based largely on Baron-Cohen's own research, The Science of Evil will change the way we understand and treat human cruelty.

Review
New York Times
"A simple but persuasive hypothesis for a new way to think about evil."

Paul Harris, Victor S. Thomas Professor of Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education
“Simon Baron-Cohen displays once again his ability to bring science to bear on troubling and controversial issues. Arguing that we explain nothing by describing acts of wanton cruelty as evil, he explores the simple but powerful hypothesis that such acts can be traced to a distinct psychological state&mdaash;a lack of empathy. He backs up his claim with a wealth of research—from developmental psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience and genetics. Those who have to deal with the aftermath of cruelty may not agree with Baron-Cohen’s analysis but they will surely be informed and provoked by his boldness and originality.”

Michael Gazzaniga, Professor of Psychology, University of California - Santa Barbara; author of The Ethical Brain
“Horrific crimes usually freeze the mind, leaving only a desire for retribution. Simon Baron-Cohen has taken us beyond those mental inadequacies. In this book, proposing a new way to think about evil people and empathy, he has laid the scientific groundwork for a future and brighter science of understanding the dark side of the human condition.”

Marco Iacoboni, Professor, UCLA; author of Mirroring People: The Science of Empathy and How We Connect with Others
“The Science of Evil is a compelling journey into the ubiquitous power of empathy in our lives. The devastating effects of ‘zero degrees of empathy’ are masterfully described and thoroughly analyzed. Professor Simon Baron-Cohen’s book shows how, with its unexpected and unsettling absence, empathy reveals its foundational role in human sociality.”

Dr. Helena Cronin, Co-Director, Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science, LSE
“Bringing cruelty triumphantly into the realm of science, this pioneering journey into human nature at last delivers us from ‘evil.’”

Uta Frith, Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Development, UCL
“A compelling and provocative account of empathy as our most precious social resource. Lack of empathy lurks in the darkest corners of human history and Simon Baron-Cohen does not shrink from looking at them under the fierce light of science.”

Matt Ridley, author of The Rational Optimist
“Simon Baron-Cohen combines his creative talent with evidence and reason to make the case that evil is essentially a failure of empathy. It is an understanding that can enlighten an old debate and hold out the promise of new remedies.”

Andrew N. Meltzoff, co-director of University of Washington Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences and co-author of The Scientist in the Crib: What Early Learning Tells Us about the Mind
“What makes someone evil? What’s the brain got to do with it? Baron-Cohen confronts the most urgent and controversial questions in social neuroscience. Both disturbing and compassionate this brilliant book establishes a new science of evil, explaining both its brain basis and development. Baron-Cohen fundamentally transforms how we understand cruelty in others and in so doing forces us to examine ourselves. Reading this book invites us to widen our own circle of empathy—compelling us to grow and comprehend, if not forgive.”

Boston Globe
“The Science of Evil contains a huge amount of useful information for a rather short read…it’s an important early step in building a more robust understanding of our species at its most horrific.”

Psychology Today
“Rigorously researched…[Baron-Cohen’s] discussion of how parents can instill lifelong empathy in their children is particularly useful.”

Terry Eagleton, Financial Times
“Attractively humane…fascinating information about the relation between degrees of empathy and the state of our brains.”

Richard Holloway, Literary Review
“Ground-breaking and important.... This humane and immensely sympathetic book calls us to the task of reinterpreting aberrant human behaviour so that we might find ways of changing it for the better.... The effect…is not to diminish the concept of human evil, but to demystify it.”

The Spectator (UK)
“Short, clear, and highly readable. Baron-Cohen guides you through his complex material as if you were a student attending a course of lectures. He’s an excellent teacher; there’s no excuse for not understanding anything he says.”

Times Higher Education Supplement (UK)
“Engaging and informative.”

Dorothy Rowe, The Guardian (UK)
“A book that gets to the heart of man’s inhumanity to man.... Baron-Cohen has made a major contribution to our understanding of autism.”

Ian Critchley, Sunday Times (UK)
“Fascinating… bold.”

Science Focus
“Easy to read and packed with anecdotes. The author conveys brain research with verve.”

Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“Baron-Cohen’s professorial background shines through in the book’s tone and in step-by-step, engaging prose urging both academic and lay reader alike to journey with him in scientific inquiry.”

Library Journal
“Clearly written and succinct, this book will enrich but not overwhelm interested readers…provides a useful perspective for understanding human pathology, including events like Columbine and the Holocaust.”

Understanding Empathy
By Karyll Banadera
How does someone hurt another person without feeling a bit of remorse? Are they pure evil? Or should we use the term “empathy erosion”? But what is empathy, and how does it relate to people doing evil? Simon Baron-Cohen, the author of this book, achieved his PhD in Psychology at University College London and has previously written three books about psychology. Baron-Cohen wrote The Science of Evil: On Empathy and The Origins of Cruelty to explain to the readers how empathy works and what empathy’s role to humans is.

In the first chapter entitled “Explaining “Evil” and Human Cruelty”, the author introduces the book by giving examples of cruel acts known worldwide such as: the inhumane experiments that Nazis did to the Jews, the Armenian genocide, and also common crimes like robbery and theft. Baron-Cohen reveals in this chapter that people with lower empathy tend to see other living beings as objects and can’t entirely relate to them. Baron-Cohen also perfectly made clear in this introductory chapter that the lack of empathy is not the only reason why people could hurt others, but argues that a lack of empathy is an important factor for how others can be cruel.

“The Empathy Mechanism: The Bell Curve”, which is the second chapter, is the portion of the book where the author defines what empathy means. Baron-Cohen warns the readers that empathy has a lot of meanings and doesn’t have one solid definition. The author states that some definitions of empathy include: being able to identify and read other people’s emotions and ignoring our own personal needs to accommodate other people. The second chapter continues with the author displaying a way to measure one’s level of empathy which is a scale called Empathy Quotient (EQ). Through the Empathy Quotient questionnaire, a person would have a rough idea of how much empathy he or she has. The levels of empathy ranges from 0 up to level 6; wherein 0 is a person having no empathy at all, and 6 is a person with an extraordinary amount of empathy. The book also talks about the Empathy Circuit. The Empathy Circuit is composed of different parts of the brain that plays a part in a person’s empathy. The latter part of the chapter is where the readers will know some of the most important parts of the brain that have a role in the Empathy Circuit such as the amygdala and the somatosensory cortex.

The third chapter is entitled “When Zero Degrees of Empathy Is Negative”. The third chapter mainly talks about people who have low empathy. This chapter reveals that people in the zero-negative spectrum are the people experiencing the bad effects of lacking empathy, and those people are the ones who will most likely do cruel things. Chapter three especially focuses on the people with psychological issues. These psychological issues are called The Three Forms of Zero-Negative which is composed of: Borderline personality disorder, Psychopathy, and Narcissism. While the fourth chapter entitled “When Zero Degrees of Empathy Is Positive”, tackles the issue of people who lacks empathy but is engaged in cruel or destructive behavior. The author uses as an example people with autism who can excel at the fields of art and literature.

The fifth chapter of the book, “Empathy Gene”, shows that there is a biological component to empathy. Chapter five enumerates and describes the genes that might be involved on a person’s level of empathy. While the last chapter of the book, “Reflections on Human Empathy”, is where the author reiterates the purpose of the book. The purpose is to realize more about the realm of empathy. Baron-Cohen also introduces the new ten ideas that he wanted the readers to remember in regards to understanding more about empathy. The author finally concludes the book by giving the readers food for thought about empathy.

Overall, choosing and reading this book is the best decision. The information and data presented by the author in this book were easy to grasp and process. Baron-Cohen did a great job in making the readers understand how empathy works even though the reader might not be an expert in psychology. The author also includes the Empathy Quotient at the back of the book, so that the readers could test the amount of empathy they have. If you want a good read to help you understand the “evil” side of humans, this book is highly recommended. This book will surely make you question your idea of “evil”.

A great book but too short
By Jon Reisdorf
I read Science of Evil: On Empathy and the origins of Cruelty by Simon Baron-Cohen at one sitting.  That's rare for me.  I usually like to dip in a little and then think it over for a day or so but the material was so gripping that I was on the edge of my seat.  I waited quite a few days before writing this review to process what I read.  Here is what I've concluded: if you want to truly understand evil, its source and a possible direction for a solution to evil this book is for you.  It gave me valuable new insights into evil as well as providing a solid, scientific basis for conclusions I've reached through study and experience.  And it lead me to pursue deeper research on the study of evil and empathy.
What made this book so gripping was its relevancy.  Like all of us, I have had way too many exposures to evil in my life.  I submit that on a bell curve evaluating those who have personal knowledge of evil I would be on the downward slope toward the extreme range.  Without going into the grim details, I've seen, heard, and experienced evil from the inside out.  I live it as a victim of sexual abuse.  I studied it as a historian.  And I observed it working in a maximum security prison for two years.  I am a counselor on the GI Rights Hotline and have been trained in suicide intervention.  Today I take calls and work on cases of men and women who in many cases have experienced evil first hand.  I hear their stories as well of the stories of vets suffering from PTSD trying to get help for their suffering.
While working in the prison system, 1978 - 1980, and more recently in my career as a public school teacher I worked with the emotionally challenged.  Public school teachers, particularly if you taught in inner city schools, work daily with some children who are severely emotionally and sometimes physically damaged.  And finally, my wife and I spent years living and working unsuccessfully with a family member who is emotionally disturbed.  We know only too well how lonely, difficult, and relatively unsupported such work is.  Reading Science of Evil, I realized the sad soul why were trying to help was suffering from undiagnosed Asperger's.  That discovery was a huge relief.  We finally understand why he was so unempathetic and, yet, thankfully did not seriously harm others.  So I have more than a passing interest in the subject of evil and empathy, the two subjects of Baron-Cohen's important book.
Most of the books I've read about evil have been from the perspective of depth psychology.  Since 1980, I've read and reread pretty much everything Erich Fromm has written on human destructiveness and aggression.   These books delve deeply into evil and its causes.  Fromm has written fascinating case studies of Martin Luther, Hitler and Himmler.  But these studies,  while based on impeccable logic and the best available science of the time, are subjective.  Baron-Cohen's book is based on sound objective science.
Both men were serious men of science.  Fromm (1900- 1980), founder of Scientist Against Nuclear Energy (SANE) was a psychoanalyst and sociologist who had advanced degrees in both.  Simon Baron-Cohen is Professor of Developmental Psychopathology at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Both share the perspective of a Jew, in the case of Fromm a German Jew, who knows evil all too intimately.  This gave both a unique ethnic/racial perspective unavailable to most gentiles.
Both Fromm and Baron-Cohen also write that evil is closely related to the objectification of the other.  Viewing people as non-human or deeply "other" is necessary for a human to rape, beat, mutilate, enslave or murder.  Fromm explains the process of evil from a sociological/psychological perspective that while profound is not fully objective.  He, like Baron-Cohen, concludes that close to zero empathy occurs with those who commit evil actions.  Baron-Cohen, however, provides a modern, scientific basis for similar conclusions reached by Fromm working before modern neuroscience.
The book Science of Evil is not all science.  Baron-Cohen shares his horrors reading as a child about Nazi's who ran concentration camps by day and went home at night to read  nursery stories to their children from a light with a shade made of human skin.  Such stories jolted me out of my white- male privileged comfort zone but imagine how much more affecting  if I had had relatives who were murdered in a such camps.
Baron-Cohen also shares lessons learned from years of cutting edge research with the autistic.  Serial rapists, murders and the autistic and those suffering from Asperger's Syndrome share being at or near zero on the empathy scale Baron-Cohen and his colleagues developed.  However, people with autistic and Asperger's seldom if ever hurt others.  The difference is they have developed a moral code that keeps them from harming others.  In Baron-Cohen's analysis it's the difference from zero-positive from the zero-negative of the narcissist, Machievellian, and psychopaths.   This is a powerful insight with enormous implications.  Even people with zero empathy - with autism and Asberger's can be trained or train themselves not to harm others which they see as essentially objects.  But what about psychopaths?  Are they even capable of empathy?  I've known a few psychopaths in my day and the question haunted me but the answer was not available in Baron-Cohen's Science of Evil.
I looked online for answers to this question.  In the Netherlands  brain imaging research of psychopaths in prison for violent crimes revealed that "charming" (Machievellian?) psychopaths can turn on and off empathy.  See - Coldhearted Psychopaths Feel Empathy Too by Tanya Lewis,   July 24, 2013 07:19pm ET posted in livescience.com  Researchers had psychopaths while being imaged see a film which consistently evoked empathetic brain response in "normal" humans.  There was no empathetic brain response in the psychopathic subjects.  Asked to watch the film again while "trying to be empathetic" their brains lit up like normals.
This is proof that zero-negatives could potentially become zero-positives.  However, as my own experience with criminals suggest caution is needed.  When I worked at Narconon at the maximum security prison in Minnesota (SRM) my partner and I concluded that what we were producing in our program were "happy criminals."   Leopards don't easily change their spots.  Most prisons are universities of lower learning where criminals become better, more successful criminals.  Not that they can't change nor that we shouldn't keep trying but it's a long hard slog with many setbacks and few successes.
In the title to this review I suggested the book was too short.  Like any good read, Baron-Cohen left me wanting more.  But could more be less?  Not in this case.  Obviously,  Baron-Cohen couldn't include research that happened after publication.  However, I think the author might have shared some of the research of neuroscientist Dr. Richard J. Davidson, who leads the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the Waisman Center, University Wisconsin-Madison.  Davidson and his colleagues conduct rigorous scientific research on healthy qualities of mind such as kindness, compassion, altruism, forgiveness, mindfulness and well-being.  Their findings support Baron-Cohen's thesis.
For further theory read A General Theory of Love by Thomas Lewis, Fari Amini and Richard Lannon, three San Francisco Bay psychiatrists, who popularized limbic resonance which arise as we experience empathy and intuition.  For ways to deepen your own empathy I recommend A Path With Heart and A Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield a clinical psychologist, meditation teacher and former Buddhist Monk in the Theravadin tradition.
Length aside, this is a wonderful, important book that deserves five stars, with a little more stuff.

Review of The Science of Evil by Baron-Cohen: un-empathically applying categories about degrees of empathy
By Lou Agosta
Strengths: Baron-Cohen appreciates that it is empathy or lack thereof that makes us human and that empathy can be used for good as well as evil. As such, the narrative begins with examples of atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis and modern day perpetrators of genocide. Not for the faint of heart. Contains a rough-and-ready quantifiable "empathy quotient" test that is sure to be useful for something, given our evidence-based insurance world, even if the test is easy to second guess, There is much truth in the position that there are disorders of empathy, where empathy is missing, and "takes down" related aspects of our shared humanity.
Weaknesses: As benefits a work that aspires to popularity, it maps empathy to broad levels of pathology such as psychopath, borderline personality disorder, and narcissism, thus un-empathically putting human beings into categories based on lack of empathy. Autism spectrum disorders (e.g., Asperger's as Zero Positive) is the ultimate absence of empathy. Identifies a neurological "empathy circuit" in the brain in an exercise that would have been described as "brain mythology" [Gehirn Mythologie] in the days of Theodor Meinert, Moritz Benedikt, and Sigmund Freud. Remember the latter abandoned his celebrated Project for a Scientific Psychology as unworkable, among many reasons, because there is a conceptual abyss between the language of neurology and that of human meaning. Baron-Cohen made an astonishing and inspiring contribution in his 1995 Mindblindness. Rather than rework the later to integrate empathy - an assignment that is easier said than done - the latter (empathy) has been added on with relatively limited integration. The result is engaging and worth reading but ultimately disappointing and, in a strange and uncanny way, lacking in empathy.
