Organic chemistry for fun

I bought this book and another Organic chemistry for dummies book because I had never learned this stuff in college. This book is way easier to understand than the dummies book. I have given up on that book all together and have continued to read this one. The way this book is written seems to make sense to me, but there are some difficult things that I have to re-read.

AMAZING FOR A SMALL BOOK!!!

I had the first version of this text before upgrading to this new one. This book is amazing in the amount of material that it covers in such a small package. As a teach yourself guide this book is very good and it is about ten to twenty percent cheaper than a textbook. I am a huge fan of organic chemistry and biochemistry and have had two textbooks and currently own the Klein "Organic Chemistry." The combination of this book along with the Klein textbook is, in my opinion, a very good combo for self instruction. This book, "Organic Chemistry Demystified" is very helpful for self study as the primary textbook also - in my opinion.

Better explained elsewhere?

This book does not simplify Organic Chemistry at all. Its every bit as complex as a regular textbook. The only reason to buy this one instead is that its cheaper. I studied Organic Chemistry for Health Sciences at university. This book is more complex than that course. I'm hoping the Dummies books are better explained than this one. If you need an advanced book on Organic chemistry, this may be for you. It wasn't for me.

Hello and thank you for stopping by. We are excited to share with you the journey of writing this book. This is our first book, and it pretty much happened on accident. Well, maybe I should say that it was a "divine appointment" instead (that sounds much better and gives credit where credit is due).

Adam and I were looking to create a short 20-page eBook showcasing the common mistakes that we made throughout our journey in network marketing. As we began to brainstorm and put our memories down on paper, a flood of ideas and past faux pas literally began to overwhelm our notebooks.

Every night, when we would take our daughter out for an evening stroll, we would remember more and more. As we laid our heads down on our pillows, both of us would write our sections for each chapter in the notes section of our iPhones. The brightness of our screens would glow in our faces amidst the darkenss of the room, as we would pour our hearts into the creation of this book. In a matter of 2 months, we ended up with a 158-page book. We were amazed.

We were amazed for a couple reasons. First, we wrote the entire book in the notes sections of our iPhones. Wow, that just proves you don't need anything fancy to write a book, just a great idea that you are extremely passionate about. So, if you have a book inside you, and you haven't started on it yet, we hope that encourages you.

Second, we made so many mistakes throughout our network marketing career, and we still became successful! We were still able to create a lifestyle of freedom that we are so thankful for. If you only get one thing from reading this book, it's that you can fail over and over again, and still reach your dreams.

After this book was finished we printed about 1000 pre-launch copies. The feedback we were getting was tremendous, and it solidified the purpose of this book: to help people accelerate success, alleviate rejection and elevate the profession of network marketing.

The focus of our training platform was also birthed from this book (even though we started writing it for the training platform, I guess its a chicken and egg situation). That's why we consider this book a "divine appointment". All our past mistakes and moments of hurtful rejection are all serving a greater purpose that is beyond our own journey.

Our passion is to teach those, who have their hopes and dreams riding on a network marketing business, avoid the mistakes that we made so often. These are the very mistakes that caused us unnecessary rejection. These mistakes caused others to label us "That Guy". When people experience this type of rejection, many retreat from the fight for their dreams. We would have quit as well, but we had nowhere else to go.

You may relate to our journey. You may be new to network marketing, and you want to have success in your business without putting your reputation or relationships on the line. We have great news for you, it is definitely possible, and we will teach you exactly how you can build your business by honoring people.

Perhaps you're a leader, and you are tired of hopeful newbies doing the disappearing act on you, because the fear of rejection overwhelms them and keeps them from building their businesses.

We believe this book will help your team tremendously, because it fills "The Gap." You see, there is a gap in network marketing training. "Helped me to believe too"

The book was the second book I purchased as an E-Book when I started in Network Marketing after "Your First Year in Network Marketing" by Mark Yarnell. Unfortunately I never got around to reading it until much later in my newfound profession. Reading this book was like a walk down memory lane. I have been guilty of at least 11 of the 21 Guys/Gals described in this book. Actually, probably more. I truly enjoyed the exercises at the end of each chapter that help drive action and confidence. My biggest take away was that is okay to be human and make mistakes and most importantly that we can learn from them. I am always amazed by the stories offered by top professionals in the industry like Adam and Michelle simply because they validate that ordinary people can and do succeed in this business just like in any other. By learning from their mistakes, persevering and believing in themselves, their products and their services. Thanks Michelle and Adam for bringing this book to life and helping me to believe too.

What can I say...awesome book. I wish I had this when I first started in MLM. I did it all wrong now I know why. Adam and Michelle use examples that are real life mistakes that I am sure we all made (and hope newer entrepreneurs will not make). This should be one of the first books you read on you path to personal development connected to MLM. It is quick and easy to read. I have the kindle version; should have purchased the actual book to dog ear and add notes. Love it!!!

Meticulous Philology

In December, 1982 I attended Joseph Yahuda's lecture at the Finchley Synagogue in North London on "Hebrew is Greek". Many in the audience were Christian scholars who challenged the author on the derivations of some of the words. Politely, Yahuda pointed out that some basic errors were made when the Septuagint was produced.In my bones, I felt Yahuda was on to something and, at vast expense, bought his tome and labour of love.

On 18th May, 1983 I invited myself, accompanied by my Greek-speaking wife, to Yahuda's grace-and-favour flat where he lived alone. Seated behind assorted dictionaries,he asked me to read out aloud in Hebrew from any of the 680 pages and soon stopped me in my tracks to say I had missed out a word. Since then, I have almost weekly referred to his magnum opus to further understand his research. Knowing his outstanding background as a biblical scholar and linguist along with his many years as a Barrister-at-Law, I soon became persuaded that his thesis was probably right and said so. "No", he countered, "You must understand. We are talking about pre-Homeric Greek."

Abba Eban, that renowned linguist, had been sent a copy and pronounced it "interesting" -- a diplomatic accolade.

Aged 90, Yahuda's curiosity for knowledge knew no bounds and he set about obtaining a PHd in Biology at King's College. A man of small stature, he was blessed with great wisdom and humility.

Neutral on book, disdainful of its critics

The reviewer who writes:
"his work depends almost entirely on "assonances," the similar sound of two unrelated words. Just to make an example, the Hebrew word kayin (spear) must be related to the New World word cayenne (pepper). Of course, attempting to make the semantic link between the supposedly related words leads to absurd associative thinking: "cayenne comes from kayin because you 'pepper' your enemies with spears in battle." Real linguistic links funtion like the Sanskrit word for "father," patri..."
Is guilty of the fallacy of analogy. He offers not proof but contradiction without evidence. Clearly, he didn't read it and embarrasses himself by offering an opinion. I haven't read it either and offer no opinion on the book other than to say that all the criticism is ignorant and guilty of what the critics accuse the author of: argument by analogy. I give it three stars for exposing the terrible logic of its reviewers.

Irma Rombauer collected recipes from friends for the first Joy of Cooking, and published it herself. For this sixth edition, the All New, All Purpose Joy of Cooking, Ethan Becker, grandson of Irma and son of Marion Rombauer Becker, worked with Maria Guarnaschelli, senior editor and vice president at Scribner's. Together, they called on top food professionals to produce a Joy that reflects the way we eat today.

Five new chapters satisfy today's love of pasta, pizza, noodles, burritos, grains, and beans, including soy. The roughly 3,000 recipes, most revised from earlier editions, give the food processor and microwave their due. Interest in ethnic flavors, grazing, leaner meats, more fish, and less fat are reflected, and old standbys such as Tuna Noodle Casserole and Fried Chicken are updated. Information on canning, jams, pickles, and preserves is replaced by expanded material on grilling, barbecuing, flavored oils, and vinegars. Also gone is the personal voice of the old Joy. Starred Review. They say mother knows best, but in the case of this classic cooking volume, first published 75 years ago, the adage might be more accurately "mother—and grandmother—know best." For while some previous editions of Joy have embraced passing fads and shunned the earlier versions' old-school charm, this time, the editors (led by Irma's grandson and Marion's son, Ethan) have stayed true to the spirit of the original. Fond of its forebear's quirky phrases ("There is nothing simple about these uncomplicated-looking fungi" or "a pig resembles a saint, in that he is more honored after death than during his lifetime"), the new narrative of Joy is one of, well, joy. Its recipes will prompt readers to bound into the kitchen; their range and depth is such that there really is something for everyone. Enchiladas, sushi, bagel chips, smoked brisket and corn dogs make their first appearance, while ice cream, nut butters and beef fondue return after some time away. The use of "we" throughout the text will reassure those skeptical of, say, preparing game (a section that, incidentally, has been expanded), and the overall feeling of the kitchen as a place of empowerment and enrichment makes this an essential work for all cooks. The concept of "essence"?that intrinsic quality without which an object is no longer itself?underlies the controversy surrounding the new Joy of Cooking. Original author Rombauer pioneered the "user-friendly" style, demystifying kitchen basics with reliable, unfussy recipes. Since Rombauer's death in 1962, subsequent editions by her daughter, Marion Becker, have expanded the scope while attempting to preserve the conversational tone. Now the sixth revision may indeed have a new and different essence; detractors attack the inclusion of exotic dishes as a betrayal of Rombauer's homespun intent and claim that her accessible voice is gone. Yet this revised American classic is essential. The recipes are still unfussy, e.g., a simple tapenade uses ordinary canned olives. No matter how far the new Joy has altered its initial purpose, it remains one of the most complete, all-purpose cookbooks available. Since a majority of the old recipes are gone, however, both past and current editions belong on the shelf.

Great book with recipes long since forgotten. Easy to read and easy recipes to prepare. The author original humor still in the book which makes it so much better.

Best. Ever.

This is the book that taught me how to cook! My mom had given me a copy years ago when I was first on my own. I loved it, it is so informative. Not only does it include many recipes (yes, some of them are a bit dated, but I actually kind of like that about it.) but it includes so many tips, instructions, etc that are really pretty indispensable and that are not included in most cookbooks. Sure, most cookbooks include a chapter on equipment, terminology, and maybe even some instruction on heating sources and techniques, but this goes beyond that. This where I learned how to break down a whole chicken (cheaper than buying it already cut up), how to carve meats, how to pick out fruits and veggies, how to prevent dry turkey, how to cook different cuts of meat the best ways, and the green bean casserole recipe (NOT the mushroom soup fried onion dish most know by this name) is still my favorite way to prepare green beans.
The newer versions omit a lot of the information I found so helpful, with perhaps the exception of the anniversary edition (I have heard, anyway). I lost my copy years ago, so when I saw my favorite edition for sale on Amazon I was truly excited! The book is in very good edition, some light staining around the very edges of the book that may just be from aging paper. I am very impressed with the condition of the book.

MISSING RECIPES IN LATEST EDITION

I've used joy of cooking for so many years it's impossible to count. I recently needed to replace our 20 year-old copy as the binding has totally failed. To my distress the new copy is slightly smaller with a different less readable font. Most importantly the new joy of cooking is missing some recipes that we have previously used. This is forced us to cut and tear out the recipes from the old copy.

It had never occurred to me that later versions of classic cookbooks would remove recipes. My confidence has been shaken here wondering what other recipes that perhaps we use less often are now missing. I cannot give this latest version a high star review due to this fact.

One glaring flaw to a great resource

The Cthulhu Mythos Encyclopedia is a great resource for fans of the Cthulhu Mythos, fans of the Call of Cthulhu RPG, fans of weird fiction, and fans of cosmic horror. There is a great amount of detail in the book on creatures, gods, and characters in the mythos. A listed bibliography and listed stories for each entry is great and helps expand a reader's suggested reading for the genre.

The book itself is a dense tome, and often reads like an academic work with no illustrations as well as keeping a large amount of entries down to a paragraph. There is an exceptional amount of entries, a great many are not works of Lovecraft himself but of other authors.

The biggest issue with this book is a lack of a Table of Contents, an index, or any way to find a particular entry quickly. For a dense 400 page book, this is a major hindrance and one that can't be overlooked.

This is a necessary resource for anyone serious about the Cthulhu Mythos. Whether you are a writer, gamer or an enthusiast of HP Lovecraft and other horrors, this book is highly recommended. The information in this book is great for creating plot hooks, or what stories to search for to learn more about a specific topic for further exploration.

Need to find out more about Ubbo-Sathla to write a time travel story about wizards?
Look up Ubbo-Sathla, find out that Clark Ashton Smith wrote Ubbo-Sathla, and that god is mentioned in the Book of Eibon. You'll find an appendices about the Necronomicon.
More importantly Dan Harms included a guide on how to handle and use others intellectual property from a non-legalistic standpoint, but more from a standpoint of being ethically creative while respecting to the continuity.

Somewhere in storage I have the second edition of this book, but I have a digital copy on my iPhone, laptop and desktop computer. For my podcast I find this to be a great resource.
Unfortunately I have occasionally ran across instances where Mr. Harms references a story that is no longer in print and hard to find(even after contacting the author or the story). That would be my only gripe. Otherwise this is wonderful, also I am happy that it is a book that covers literature as well as RPG source material due to the fact that the two have become intertwined in the last 30+ years. I am also thankful that the book doesn't rely on any goofy lovecraftian tricks, spooky typefaces or faux-aged paper. It's nice to have some people take this space monster business seriously.

Great CoC Mythos reference

It's a reference book on Cthulu Mythos. The Questions on the Amazon rating screen are for a novel or biography and completely irrelevant to a reference work. It's funny. They ask the same questions on a Roll Players Guide book. If you play CoC or just want to understand the world of H.P. Lovecraft and his collegues, this will help. It even has some explanations of how successive authors have changed or added to the mythos.
