Most instructional texts on investment training present complicated concepts and indicators that look great on paper but are difficult to put into practice in the real world. As the founder and CEO of the leading online trading education program in the country, Greg Capra understands exactly what you need to know in order to maximize your chances of success in the trading market, and Trading Tools and Tactics: Reading the Mind of the Market presents this information in a concise, accessible manner that will get you up to speed right away.

Understanding support, resistance, and volume, and then identifying the best times to trade are the essential elements of investment success. Price movement and level are the only truths in the markets, and this book teaches you how to interpret what the prices are telling you.

From concept to practical execution, this book covers everything from setting entries, stops, and managing trades, to knowing how to read others' mistakes and turn them into profits. New and experienced traders alike will find invaluable information on how to accurately identify trends, candle patterns, support and resistance, and other events that can be put to good use by following a few simple steps.

From the Back Cover

Practical trading advice fromthe father of trading education

"Right from the start, Capra hits the nail on the head when he says that the markets are not subjective. 'The market is not a matter of opinion,' he states definitively. Trading Tools and Tactics debunks following the latest guru in the marketplace and using fundamental analysis to make trading decisions. It then explains how you fall into these traps and how to avoid them. This book is a well-written, interesting read that continually reinforces the importance of objectivity in trading the markets. The thing that I like best about this book is that Capra is forthright and uncannily accurate in his analysis."—SUNNY J. HARRIS, author of TradeStation Made Easy!

"In Greg Capra's new book, Trading Tools and Tactics, he lays out the requirements for knowing what is important to a winning strategy and makes it understandable to a person just starting their career. The seasoned trader will also find value in his book because it clarifies where a trader can improve his technique. Greg guides you with simple language to demystify the everyday buzzwords of the trading language. These understandings will give a trader confidence by having logic behind their theory for why their strategy will produce profits. Over the years, I have worked with Pristine traders on building their success with the psychology of trading and found them to be some of the best trained traders in the industry."—ADRIENNE TOGHRAIE, founder of TradingOnTarget.com

About the Author

Greg Capra is president and CEO of Pristine Capital Holdings, Inc., the nation’s leading educational service for self-directed traders. He has 15 years of experience as a day trader and swing trader.
Many years ago, Capra realized how to collect valuable intra-day information from stock quotes and store them into an orderly computerized system. He utilized a program called SuperTic to track
and evaluate this information, which led him to his pursuit of intra- day trading tactics.

In those days, free online stock charts and quotes were not widely available, and institutional traders had a great advantage over the individual trader. Today, the playing field is more level. Capra saw
an opportunity to build an educational and research firm for selfdirected, independent traders. This meant that ordinary people could now possess a sophisticated level of research on par with institutional traders and hedge funds.

Capra developed The Pristine Swing Trader, an advisory newsletter with over 60,000 subscribers, and is co-author of the book, Tools and Tactics for the Master Day Trader (McGraw-Hill, 2000). Pristine.com was founded in 1994 and combines publication-based education with seminars and education services aimed at helping traders gain an intuitive understanding of the markets. Over 400 seminars are conducted each year around the world.

Before founding Pristine, Capra spent 15 years running his own business. Since founding Pristine.com, his desire has been to educate the individual investor in quantitative analysis of market movements.

From a Traders Perspective ...
By David A. Smith
Typically when I buy a book if I pick up just one great idea or strategy I consider it a win. Or, if I gain some clarification or perspective on a previous idea from another book I consider that a win. In this case I think I may have picked up and clarified more than one. I have to admit that I have read the book more than once and it isn't perfect but it certainly clarifies many trading idea's and concepts that you must have a firm grasp of to trade successfully. I would characterize the theme of the book as "Objectivity" and how to be objective when trading.

I too am frustrated by the use of greyscale for the book and not color but the concepts and strategies outlined within the book are well done and don't necessarily require all the charts to be color. But yes, I certainly would have preferred it. For the record, Steve Nison is considered the foremost authority on Candlestick charting techniques in the US and NONE of his charting books are in color.

----------

Chapter 1: Subjectivity Doesn't Work in the Market: This chapter has what I believe to be THE most important concept in trading. "The Four Stages of the Markets"! You might already see the market this way but haven't know exactly what to call it or maybe you have never looked at the market this way before but I use the four stages as the basis and is THE first question I ask myself, regardless of time frame, before I take a trade. "What stage is the market in on this time frame"? Once you know what stage the market is in you immediately know what entry strategy I need to pull out of my bag of entry tricks to determine my entry; position size, stop loss and potential exit points. If you don't know the answer to these four questions before you take a trade you should consider NOT taking that trade. The author covers these stages quickly because truthfully they just aren't that hard to see or understand. Recognizing the stages and trading them accurately is a whole different ballgame. When you learn the stages and how they transition you can literally find the specific bar that changes the stage allowing you to be on the right side of the market, with the trend, before anyone else.

Chapter 2: Candlestick Analysis: If you use Japanese Candlestick's to trade you probably have the Nison books on your shelf already.

Chapter 3: Support & Resistance - Price is King. Differentiating between Major and Minor support and realizing that minor support is more important than major support along will both save and make you more money than you can imagine. Support and Resistance traders trying to understand why getting long at Major Support fails most of the time when your larger time frame is in a uptrend your answer may finally be here. Why is minor support stronger than major support and why is it actually minor support that makes the markets work may be that light bulb moment for your trading. I highly recommend you understand this concept. How about understanding when support is supposed to fail so that you aren't long when it does or when resistance is actually going to stop your trade from going higher and when you can actually continue to let your trade run? This is just one of those chapters the author literally could have written a separate book for.

Chapter 4: Moving Averaged the Right Way: Visual Aids to Price Action. So if I told you a moving average is NOT a support or resistance area would you believe me? "But it works" you say. Have you considered that perhaps when it does work it's because of something else on the chart your aren't seeing on either your entry time frame OR a larger time frame? This chapter may give you some insight it how to better use those moving averages as a timing mechanism (focal area) verse using them as support and resistance. There's also a great strategy for trading with the trend using both the 20MA and 40MA that if you are patient enough to both find and wait for the proper entry on any time frame is a extremely high probability trade.

Chapter 5: Volume is Money: Commitment to Prices. I am primarily a currency trader so accurate and consistent volume is not a luxury I have but for trading instruments where volume is reliable then this chapter be more of a clarification win for you.

Chapter 6: Retracement Analysis: Using Retracement Analysis to Continue Your Move: Understanding how and when a stock 'rests' after a strong move and when that pullback after that move is a normal reaction that you should not worry about is another one of the clarification points that you is critical to understanding when not to panic. This chapter dovetails very nicely with the support and resistance concepts from chapter 3. It's difficult to separate these two chapters in terms of importance and how together they can be used to manage your expectations for any of your trades regardless of the time frame you have entered on. This chapter is also one of the first chapters where we start to see multiple time frame analysis and gain some understanding of exactly how important that concept is.

Chapter 7: Bar-by-Bar Analysis: For some reason the first thing I thought of when I saw the chapter of this book was "Pub Crawl" but apparently that's not what this chapter is about. This is a short chapter but it does introduce to you the fundamental pattern that you are looking for when trading. Your ability to understand how to take this pattern and 'see' it across multiple time frames is actually one of the most important concepts you can learn as a trader. It may be one of the shortest but the concept is critical.

Chapter 8: Market Internals: I am embarrassed to say I have yet to read this chapter. Why? Being a currency trader I use the correlation between the 6 major pairs and the crosses as my market internals. With that said, if you trade some of the SP 500 Mini you may find these market internals very helpful.

Chapter 9: Relative Strength. Granted this isn't just a equity trading concept but I have not read this chapter given that in currency trading we look for correlation, which is a form a relative strength, but within the confines of this book it is primarily a equity concept correlated with the market, defined as the Q's or the SPY, so I have yet to read this chapter.

Chapter 10: The Trend is Your Friend - There are only three directions: The cliche only makes sense if you can accurately identify the trend and then coordinate that identification of that trend across time frames. Until you can do that you are gonna struggle as a trader. The basic building block of a identifying a trend is a pivot but pivots come in all shapes and sizes and your ability to determine which ones to pay attention to is critical. Here again we see great references back to support and resistance and of course those pesky moving averages.

Chapter 11: Shoot the Gap. This chapter is really just a overview of how to trade gaps. Gaps are something you need to understand on a level that this chapter really doesn't do justice. In terms of equity trading he probably needed to mention them because they happen every day to almost every stock but for beginners or as a introduction its fine.

Chapter 12: Frame-by-Frame: The Concept of Multiple Time Frames. Remember those 'stages' I mentioned as being so VERY important from Chapter 2? Well this is where that concept really shines. Once you understand the stages and how to identify them you then need to apply that understanding to multiple time frames. The author refers to the larger time frame as a 'Macro' time frame and the smaller time frame as the 'Micro'. Your goal is simple really. Match the stages across time frames. If the daily (Macro) is in a (Stage 2) uptrend then you need to wait for the 15M (Micro) time frame to also be in a (Stage 2) uptrend. Earlier chapters have already given you the 'pattern' you need to match and/or be looking for to enter the trade. In this chapter he points out "Three Incredible Rules for Trading". The third one, using failure of a smaller time frame, is my favorite.

Chapter 13: Making Failure Work for You - Recognizing When Patterns Fail. So here you are, you understand the stages, you understand pivots and trends and you can see those pivots and trends across multiple time frames. Now you want to get into a trade because it as all become so clear and then ... the smaller time frame entry fails! Funny, because that's exactly what I am looking for. This is a great chapter both technically and conceptually. This is a very advanced topic but the concept is pretty basic and very well laid out here for you to build a trading strategy around. This might be my favorite chapter for what that's worth. I personally think you could write a book on how to use the failure of a micro time frame to enter a macro time frame but this author wrote a chapter. There are references throughout the book using this concept to keep a eye out for them. It is a fantastic strategy for entering a trade.

Chapter 14: Manage the Trade and the Money - The missing link. I realize it's hyperbole to call each chapter the most important. Invariably it becomes a cliche that when used we don't even really hear anymore. We dismiss it as perhaps some habitual phrase like 'um' that so many people use as a way to think or gather thoughts before they begin speaking again, usually in cliche, about something they feel is important. But this chapter sheds some light on some concepts that if you don't understand and apply you will blow up your account. Your trading or investing career, whether you realize it or not, is predicated on understanding how to treat each trade equally. If you think one trade is better than another then you need to seriously look at that 'other' trade and consider never taking it again. Here again we see a reference to those three pesky questions you better know the answer to before you put your hard earned money on the line; the exact price to enter, the exact price upon which to know when we were wrong, and the approximate area to exit the trade for profit. Yes, I realize and the author realizes that different time frames imply different position sizes for trades ... but do you? How much to risk on a trade is a critical concept that the author does a very nice job of addressing.

Chapter 15: Getting Through a Typical Day. This chapter is basically self explanatory and is a summary of how to get your thoughts organized both before and after the trading day. But he touches on a having a 'trading plan' and how to compare your daily trades to your plan so that you can change/improve/modify either your trading plan or your execution.

Chapter 16: There is only One Truth in the Markets: Price is King. I think that just about covers it really!.

----------

Is the book perfect? Of course not. It frustrates me that the charts are not in color. I will forever not understand why the charts aren't in color given that when you trade using Japanese Candlesticks the color of the bars are critical. Particularly when daily charts are used as examples, which invariably contain gaps, that without color you can barely determine whether the daily bar is bullish or bearish. Sometimes, but not often, the wording is awkward or difficult to understand. I have a feeling this book was a long time in the making but it probably needed to be better proof read. (I realize you could probably say that about my review as well so here's to the kettle calling the pot black). I realize the Author has a trading school, which is mentioned in the book, so they use some terms that are specific to there way of teaching but in those instances they are usually pretty clear about the concept given that the names really don't matter anyway. I have attended some of the free workshops of the author and been able to ask questions directly about the book.

I have both the iPad Kindle version of the book and the Hard copy. The iPad kindle version has all the quirks of a ebook in that sometimes pages that were once on the left are now on the right or charts have 'moved' so I purchased the hard copy as well for whatever that's worth.

I am a prop trader but NOT a prop trader for the Author or Pristine.

I can't speak to the Wiley site and whether or not that works.

Top Content, Chart Web Sight Is There
By Jay in Phoenix
The "Tools & Tactics" are clearly explained and work, plain and simple. David A. Smith's review covers the overall content in a completely sufficient and useful manner so I will not attempt to say more. The overall content far outweighs the problems, but problems exist.

First, and of less importance, is the editing and proofreading. There are sentences where you can tell what is meant but proofreading by anyone competent would have restructured the sentence because a word was left out or it was just plain clumsy. It makes you wonder if the publisher, Wiley, did more than just print and distribute the book.

Second, and more important, is the problem with the charts, as mentioned by others, which are candlestick charts. They are all gray vs. slightly darker gray instead of red vs. green or solid black vs. outlined, and that just doesn't cut it. The book references a Web site where the charts are on PowerPoint and are crisp, clear and red vs. green. The site's PowerPoint presentation can be downloaded so as to reside on the reader's computer. This helps greatly but requires having the computer and book physically together to have the match between words and charts clear. Doable, but not really convenient, especially if not reading at home at a desk or similar.

It would be well worth it to have crisp, clear charts and pay, say, $10 more for the book.

Extremely worthwhile book
By Shauna
This is definitely the best book on trading that I've found. All other books I've read are to some extent similar to each other in that the same information is explained the same way. This book, however, is so different in that respect. The author approaches technical analysis with common sense and takes the time to explain what is really happening on the chart in terms of buyers and sellers. He explains basic concepts of technical analysis in his unique way, constantly bringing the reader back to support and resistance as the ultimate reference. He has clarified everything for me.
I was looking for a book that did more than explain basic technical analysis. I wanted to find tips on trading that I could not find in other books. This book did not disappoint, as the title does represent what you will find in this book - trading tactics.
The one thing that really handicaps the reader, unfortunately, is the color of the candles. They are all black! There are places in the beginning of the book where they are black and slightly less black, but for the most part, every candle on every chart is black. Like another reviewer mentioned, I would gladly pay $10 to $20 more to get an edition of this extremely valuable book with colored (or even clear vs. black) candles. It would add so much to this amazing book.
I can honestly say that I've learned more from this book than any other book on technical analysis.

Review
"I find this product is one of the strongest on the market that is more inclusive of the whole lifespan and includes the holistic considerations. The traditional separation of career counseling and personal counseling is bridged in this text. This is an excellent move to unite the counseling profession, and to demonstrate that the two cannot be separated."

"This is a very comprehensive, thorough, and inclusive reference text within the field of career development and career counseling. The author provides in-depth, contextual information related to serving special populations, including female and male clients, clients with disabilities, racial/ethnic minority clients, and clients within a variety of age groups."

Soul-crushing.
By Student4Life
I wish I could give this book less than one star. It is terrible. Truly awful. After four years for an undergraduate degree and two-and-a-half more for a masters, I can say this is the most soul-crushing, deadly-boring, poorly written text I've come across. It seems as if the author is playing a game with himself: "If it takes ten words to make my point, how many more words can I add to stretch it to a paragraph?" You'd think the publisher is paying by the word. If there is literally ANY other book you can buy, please: Buy something else. This book is so bad my classmates have actually wondered out loud if Mr. Zunker secretly hates the person to whom the book is dedicated. Yes. That bad.

I get it: career counseling is a less-than-scintillating topic under any circumstances. And I appreciate the time and effort Mr. Zunker clearly put in to writing it. This book desperately needs an editor to help the author say what he needs to say, because he could say it with a lot fewer words and in a way that doesn't make me absolutely dread cracking the book open.

Written to confuse people
By Amazon Customer
This is an awful book. The author writes it in a way that is unclear and confusing to understand. My whole class is confused behind all the theories in Ch. 2 which I feel like he should have had more chapters explaining the theories without making them seem similar from each other.

Boring and hard to understand
By Amazon Customer
This book is terrible. I can usually power through boring textbooks for the sake of a good grade, but this one was especially difficult to read. It is boring. VERY boring. What gets me the most though is how confusing it is. The terms and key words seem to be used interchangeably, which makes reading through information rich chapters like theories EXTREMELY difficult.

If your professor has assigned this book for your Career Counseling class, good luck. That is all I can really say.

A complete description of all phases from gun to the target
By Nathan F. Okun
This discussion concerning how a projectile starts its flight, flies to the target, and does things to the target is rather complete. My expertise is more in terminal ballistics (what happens against steel armor), but I learned a number of things I had not found previously in any other source. The only thing that I would like is a set of tables giving common examples of the values of various quantities used in the formulae, such as the "Hugonoit Elastic Limit" used in the metal armor always-ricochet angle formulae, for example -- a formula cannot be tested if the values necessary to solve it are not available. Tables for chemical parameters are included, but not the needed metallurgical parameters. Alternatively, sources for finding these parameters could be included in the text. Minor point, though.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6–10—Thomas wakes up in an elevator, remembering nothing but his own name. He emerges into a world of about 60 teen boys who have learned to survive in a completely enclosed environment, subsisting on their own agriculture and supplies from below. A new boy arrives every 30 days. The original group has been in "the glade" for two years, trying to find a way to escape through a maze that surrounds their living space. They have begun to give up hope. Then a comatose girl arrives with a strange note, and their world begins to change. There are some great, fast-paced action scenes, particularly those involving the nightmarish Grievers who plague the boys. Thomas is a likable protagonist who uses the information available to him and his relationships (including his ties to the girl, Teresa) to lead the Gladers. Unfortunately, the question of whether the teens will escape the maze is answered 30 pages before the book ends, and the intervening chapter loses momentum. The epilogue, which would be deliciously creepy coming immediately after the plot resolves, fails to pack a punch as a result. That said, The Maze Runner has a great hook, and fans of dystopian literature, particularly older fans of Jeanne DuPrau's The City of Ember (Random, 2003), will likely enjoy this title and ask for the inevitable sequel.—Kristin Anderson, Columbus Metropolitan Library System, OH END

Decent Read Though Not Very Thought Provoking
By Jarucia Jaycox
I first heard about this book at an SCWBWI conference where its editor from Delacorte spoke highly of how it grabbed her attention right away.

I have to agree. The one thing that Dashner does right from start to finish is barely provide enough information to answer the questions that form in the reader's mind BUT what information he gives does promote one to keep reading.

Curiosity drove me to read this book straight through...that and the fact that the writing wasn't all that challenging.

I'm not trying to bag on Dashner, but I was a little surprised at the many passed-on opportunities he had to draw me further into the story or even care more about the characters' fates .

I felt consistently disappointed with what I was offered of Thomas's character -- far too sulky and desirous of screaming at people who can hardly offer him the answers, etc. he's so desperate for. And Teresa, for as important as she's made out to be, is so flat. I think it was well within the author's scope to improve the depth of these characters considering the decent job he did on secondary characters like Chuck and Minho.

By the time I reached the end, I all but rolled my eyes. I felt roughly the same as I did when I finished watching 'The Cube'...interesting story, but what was the point of putting the characters through all that? Especially when the characters themselves hardly spend any real time trying to understand their situation. And this latter part actually seems quite critical to the purpose of the situation they're in.

Okay, I know this is meant to be YA but it certainly had room to grow in the 'thought provoking' department. It's a decent and entertaining story, but will it become the topic of critical academic discussion? Not likely.

It's far too light in depth and development as it stands. Perhaps the eventual trilogy as a whole will provide something 'more'.

Maze Runner made a lot of generic mistakes and on-the-fly plot twists that resulted in a confusing, dull story with no answers.

The story itself was interesting enough for the most part, but the pace was painfully slow and Dashner committed a few things you are not supposed to do in fictional writing, ever. I'm talking newbie mistakes here.

The second largest thing that Dashner violated was the Show, Don't Tell rule. He almost assuredly does not understand this, as a lot of his descriptions are flatly told instead of explained. "Thomas felt sad." "Thomas snapped." Dashner does not do a good job showing us his world or his characters, instead just telling us how things are. This interweaves with my next points a bit and is explained in greater detail later.

For my second point, marking the biggest mistake Dashner did with this story, he began the book with the White Room Syndrome. Much like the Show, Don't Tell rule, this is one thing that almost all writers know very deeply - do not start your story off with the white room syndrome.

The white room syndrome is where your character suddenly wakes up in a completely unfamiliar setting and knows nothing about anything - his past, his name, people he knew, etc... This is cheap because it allows you to dodge any sort of actual development in the world, its characters or the relationships that the characters have. This book in particular suffered a lot because Dashner decided to go this way.

One particular area it suffered deeply was with character development. Partially since he had no past to develop from, Thomas was a weak protagonist with nearly no original or interesting characteristics. He seems brave at times, but everybody in this book is. He seems smart at times, but so is everybody else. To me, he is almost a blank slate designed to move the story forward. I cannot list one original characteristic about him - other characters say he is interesting, but that is not the conclusion I came to - if the story didn't follow him, he would blend in with the rest of the characters.

The other characters were also an issue. Other than Minho and Chuck, I had a hard time picturing any of them or even telling them apart. Alby was the typical reckless group leader. Newt was the typical nicer more rational second-in-command. Teresa was a typical plain-Jane female side character designed to make the plot actually go somewhere. Minho was interesting, but Dashner could have developed him further than he did. And Chuck was a potentially interesting character, but Dashner killed him off for no reason.

It would have been very difficult to develop any of these characters to a great extent, though, since none of them have histories or memories outside of the maze. Because they all have heavy amnesia, they don't even remember who they are - thus, they cannot be deeply developed. They are just a bunch of people trying to get out. I have to wonder if Dashner himself had fleshed his characters out any deeper than this by this point of the story.

Another way the whole `no past' thing effects the plot is the relationship between Teresa and Tom. It was possibly one of the weakest romances I have ever read in a novel. They loved each other because they did `before it happened', not because they have actual chemistry. There was no development or movement in their relationship whatsoever - it just started off that they were in love just because they were, and that's where the book left off as well. They loved each other because it's what Dashner wanted for the story, not because it made sense for the characters.

Let's put this in contrast to the last book series I read - Divergent. In the first Divergent book, it takes almost 250 pages to fully develop the relationship between Tris and Tobias. Tobias starts off as her superior, and slowly their relationship develops and morphs into something tangible, which is why you were truly able to feel it in that series. It logically progressed into a relationship where you could really believe they had feelings for each other. In Maze Runner, the only reason I felt they loved each other was because I was told to think that. I had no real reason to assume they had feelings for each other besides that, since there was no chemistry, development, getting to know each other or even any conversations that didn't have directly to do with the plot. It was utterly emotionless and monotone and had no effect on me whatsoever - that is not how romance is supposed to be! That's not even how a mundane friendship is supposed to be! What he had with Chuck had more feeling than what he had with Teresa.

---

Then there were several gaping plot holes. One that I was particularly annoyed with was how long it took them to figure out that the Griever Hole was the only way out. I mean, seriously... I figured that out the second they introduced it and tossed the rock in. I twas utterly predictable. Just think. They have been running around this big maze for two years and have not found any exit of any sort, but in this one spot there appears to be a hole you can toss thing into to make them disappear. It took them an extra 200 pages to figure out that that was, just maybe, an exit of sorts.

Then, it surprised me to notice that Minho has noticed all of those WORLD IN CATASTROPHE: KILLZONE EXPERIMENT DEPARTMENT things all over the walls and never came to the conclusion that this was, oh, I don't know, some sort of experiment or something. It didn't even occur to the characters until the end of the book when Thomas brought it up that this might, just maybe be some sort of experiment.

Minho was a pretty intelligent character, and so was Newt and Alby. In fact, it was a main plot point at the end that they are all technically very intelligent people. If this is the case, how did they not figure all of this stuff out a very long time ago? (Getting back to the Telling issue, the only reason I had to believe they were smart was because I was told so. I was never shown them being particularly smart, especially considering the things I mentioned above.)

Then there is the scene where the sky disappears. I have several issues with this scene. First, why was the first conclusion Thomas came to that the sky was artificial? I was figuring that something covered up the sky at first, but the very first thing he figured was that it absolutely must be that the sky is fake, with no chance of another option whatsoever. There was no guesswork or figuring out to be done here - he just knew, just because he knew.

And at that, where did this even come from? To me, it seems like Dashner literally came up with that on the spot. There was absolutely nothing in this book beforehand to hint that the sky was fake - nothing. If Thomas had thought to himself that this or that looks or seem fabricated or a bit off, it would have made some sense why he came to the conclusion he did so ridiculously quickly when the sky disappeared. But there was nothing. It just happened. Something like this should have been foreshadowed.

This is something I feel he does a lot - or, forgets to do a lot. He does not develop a lot of things beforehand that eventually become important, nor does he give clarification afterwards. For an example, the telepathic talking that Teresa and Tom have. To me, this was clearly used so Teresa could move the story forward no matter where Tom was at the time being, but I would have been okay with that if there was another relevant and in-story reason why she could talk to him like that. Sure, he might answer that in the next book, but he should have answers that in this book, since it was a vital part of this story. As far as I am concerned, since he gave no good reason why that is the way it is, I am convinced the only reason why it is there is for a cheap and easy way to move the plot forward. If there is another relevant in-story reason why it exists, he probably could have come up with it in the second book.

That all might not be true, but if he either developed it beforehand or clarified it afterwards, there would be no confusion. By the end of this story, I am convinced it existed for no other reason than to easily move the story forward when it needed to, just like the sky suddenly disappearing. It felt like a random event he came up with on the spot so he could get un-stuck in his story.

---

Then, at the end, there is almost no resolution to the story whatsoever. They meet a woman who explains to them that this all happened for some sort of good reason (which I logically assumed), but then proceeded to say that that was certainly enough for them to understand and they should just accept it. She could have elaborated on just a bit more to explain a little bit of the context this story takes place in, but does not in any way mostly because she didn't feel they would want to know, or something. It seems to confuse her why making 40 people go through a maze for 2 years for less than 20 of them to survive with no context whatsoever might confused them or make then want answers of some sort.

Then a bunch of people come in and kill her, take the main characters to a safe place (while of course explaining nothing about anything, because there's no time to explain) and the book ends. Well, sort of, anyway. The bus driver rushing them to safety explains something about sun flares and a sickness that has ravaged the world and how the maze was all some sort of mental test, but it all seemed non sequitur to the rest of the story. This, again, reflects back to the issue he has with foreshadowing. There was absolutely nothing in this book to hint towards any of this, and it all comes across as being random and on-the-spot. I was unable to correlate anything that happened throughout the book to anything relevant to the sun flares.

There were very few answers to anything. Why could Tom and Teresa talk telepathically? What were the Grievers and why were they there? What was the test supposed to do, anyway? How was anything of the story relevant to the last few chapters at all?

Those are the sort of things I should not have had to wait for book 2 to have answered, since they were all relevant to this story. Sure, you need to leave some questions for the next book, but the way that he answered absolutely none of them leaves me to assume he might not have had it all figured out by this point. One could argue that Dashner was clever not to reveal anything, but that is just not the case since he did that at the expense of this story not having an actual conclusion. Because of this laziness to answer anything at all, I simply have no desire to find out what happens next. I don't care what he comes up with, since he has not shown me that even he knew where he was going with the story by that point. I'm finding it hard to believe he actually had a big grand plan to reveal to us by this point.

Take into consideration how the first Hunger Games ends. (Hunger Games 1 spoilers for those who have not read the book or seen the movie by this point. Skip this paragraph if so.) Katniss and Peeta make the government angry by making a joke out of them at the end of the Games, so at the end of book 1, we have to wait and see how they will politically fight against the government and how they can pretend to be in love when they're not. There was something truly tangible to look forward to in the sequel, and that is what drove me to pick up the next book. This was all done while making the first book a complete story with some resolution. That is how a book 1 is supposed to be done.

Now let's go back to the ending of Maze Runner. They escape the maze to learn that it existed for some sort of reason, and the book ends with the promise that you will learn what that reason was later. There is no resolution to any questions raised in the story, there is no other major hook to make you read the next book - there is just no real reason to continue. The one and only hook that the end of this book had was that you will learn what the first book was about in the second book. That's it. Instead of building up new scenarios and conflicts to transfer over, his only hook is that he withheld vital information that should have been at the end of this book that he will give in the second one. In comparison to the Hunger Games, it's quite pathetic and lazy.

I am not entirely certain how people can compare this book to the Hunger Games or Divergent. It's just not on the same level of storytelling in any area. The writing is full of telling, the story is riddled with plot holes and plot devices, the character development is lacking, the romance and relationships are boring and there is no real conclusion to the story. I am not certain why people put this book up there with some of the other major titles right now.

An author more lost than his characters? (Spoiler Alert)
By Bookgirl
After completing the Hunger Games trilogy, I was eager for another great YA dystopian read but did not find it in The Maze Runner. I was initially intrigued by the book's description. I knew there would be boys caught in a maze, with their memories wiped and little hope for escape, and I knew that the appearance of a girl on the scene would change everything. Mazes, games, riddles, and other sorts of non-traditional mysteries attract me, but Dashner's execution of his book did not.

The plot was ill-paced. At times it felt slow, because Dashner introduced the reader to the maze in the same way the main character, Thomas, was introduced to it: both the reader and Thomas learn almost everything through numerous secondary explanations by characters. In more skilled hands, this might be an effective way of immersing a reader in a fictional world. Dashner's exposition, however, felt cumbersome. As a reader, if I'm going to be told about a world rather than shown it, I'd better be told well. When I wasn't slogging through Dashner's writing, I was tumbling head-over-heels down its textual cliffs. Parts of the novel simply moved too quickly for any real character or plot development to occur. Readers are barely introduced to the main protagonist before being introduced to Teresa, the girl who supposedly changes everything. We really have very little sense for what's changing, because this inciting action comes so shortly after our encounter with Thomas.

The plot also felt as if it had been constructed with little forethought. Each step or twist in the plot seemed as if it were generated on the spot as the author wrote his way linearly through this novel. Shazam! Such and such happens out of the blue. A quick patch-up of missing explanation ensues. Shazam! The next twist happens, followed by some explanation. And so on, until one of the biggest Shazams!: The crew exits the maze and suddenly, for no apparent reason, one of their members is killed. Subtle build-up of suspense and intricately interwoven plots do not exist in this novel. It's almost entirely composed of sudden action followed by explanatory reaction.

All this might not matter so much, if I'd felt in any way connected to the characters. But I didn't. Most of the boys meshed together in my brain, particularly since so many of them end up acting "out of character" anyway. As for Teresa and Thomas, readers know little about their back-story (until the peritextual "Exclusive Wicked Correspondence" at the end), and I didn't find their characters all that complex, deep, relatable, or quirky (aside from their obvious telepathic skill). Character "complexity" in this novel was little more than character "unpredictability."

In short, I was disappointed. The reason I gave the book 2 stars instead of 1, though, is because I did at least finish it. I've no intention of reading the sequel, however.
